Picked up my first Rogers Kit.

Loading...

I just recently acquired this Rogers kit from Craigslist. The 20" bass drum and 12" tom are Cleveland era (I think 1963 based on serial numbers) and the 18" bass drum, 16" floor, 13" rack tom and 10" concert tom are all 1969 Dayton/Fullerton drums. It's in ok condition but sounds fantastic. I need another hoop for the 18 inch bass drum and an L cymbal arm then it should all be complete. The t-rods and claws on the bass drums are mismatched but the 20 has 8 originals. So I will slowly be squiring those to get it back to original. I got it from the second owner who said the guy he bought them from was a jazz player who just kept adding on drums. I'm assuming he got the Cleveland ones at the same time (unfortunately no Cleveland floor tom) and then bought all the others at the same time a few years later.

This is my first vintage kit so any restoration tips would be great! I need to remove some rust on and clean a lot of the hardware so some info on going about that would be great. Also, any parts you guys want to sell that I need would be great as well! And please, fill me in on any info on this kit as I am relatively new to Rogers.

For $300 bucks I am pretty happy with how it sounds, especially paired up with my '66 acrolite!Walking

You're going to like the Rogers drums. Given they are all beavertail era drums, they should stand up to all the play you can give them. Parts are fairly easy to find. There are a lot of threads on here about cleaning the metal without damaging it, and it is highly recommended that you do not use any steel wool.

They tend to sound very nice with basic Remo Ambassadors. Some folks like to use Emperors to get a bit lower pitch. The 20,12,16 set-up was a Rogers staple for a long period of time. Good tonal range that fits a lot of gigging situations.

I really like jet black. PM sent.

Make that 6 drums for $300! The guy I bought them from was a little shocked I didn't talk him down. I just couldn't keep a good conscience paying him any less.

Thanks Dan! You have one stunner of a kit. I've been outfitting Evans G1s all around and I fall more in love each time I play these. Hoping to get that 18 playable soon!
