1980 Ludwig P-85 Strainer Losing Tension

Loading...

Hi Guys, i could use your trusty opinions on this one.My original P-85 strainer on my 1980 Black Beauty loosens off as i play and i have to tighten the tension control knob after about three songs.Has anyone had this problem? It`s been great until the last year or so and i`ve been playing it since 82`.I use the reef-knot on the string so i know the problem is not there and maybe i need to replace it with a P-86 in which the holes will line up-am i correct here? The situation is frustrating to say the least, any help and opinions are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Hi Wayne!

P86 have the same hole pattern, fits perfect on P85 holes.

Anyway, there are some ways to keep on position a regular P85...

Q: yours have the spring on it?

Regards!

Hi Heraldo, and thanks for the hole spacing info with the P86.I`ve never removed the strainer before so don`t understand the spring question, sorry.Where inside the strainer is this spring located and what does it have to do with my situation(broken spring?)Anyway... thanks for getting back Heraldo.

Sorry Wayne, my fault... I wasn't clear enough.

Here I attached a pic with a close look to the "external" P85 spring

-there's not springs within the mechanism -

Sometimes do not work properly, "pushing" permanently the front plate down.

Maybe you got a clue here....

In any case, I'll suggest, to disassemble, check and clean the strainer. The P85 have no more than 10 pieces, you can prove the condition easily of each part.

Take your time, it's very easy -and fun, at least for me- LoLoLoLo

Hope it helps,

Heraldo, thanks for the pics and i agree i must disassemble-other than a possible spring, anything else i should be looking for ? I`d like to keep the original strainer working and on the drum if i possibly can.

Hard to tell at the distance ...but don't worry, once you disassemble, you'll probably find something "not proper"!!

Allow me to tell you that during late '70's, P85 had a kind of plastic nut just below the tension knob, and I guess it was there with that purpose (I don't have any pic right now) HFYI

The problem was the plastic were cracked -after some average use- 99% of the times!

I never tried this, but perhaps, if you find some brass/steel nut that could fit on the screw, maybe it could work as a "brake" of the loosen issue.

I dunno if I'm clear.... Good luck buddy!

Heraldo, you just may have solved my problem...that plastic nut/grommet you showed in the pic was split on mine and i`ve bought a similar plastic nut/grommet to replace it.I only own three snares and this is the one i use all the time. Thanks again Heraldo for your info and time, very much appreciated my friend. We`ll see if this is the solution?

Best,
