Glen, the lesson is the highlight of the week, I love it. In fact right now I like it more then jamming with my band. I play pretty good but I am pretty straight forward, single stroke rolls and eight note's on the hats or ride with simple beats. My instructor is teaching me funk right now, were working on Brick House by the Commodores, jez I hate that song but I get what he is doing, getting away from simple beats. He is also teaching me to use double stroke's in fills. Last week he gave me a chart for the main beat in Brick House, now I will be working on the fill part. Its really cool, he plays the bass while I play the drums. Just cant say enough, glad you asked!

She's mi-tay mi-tay....

Yeah I hate that song too. Is 36/24/36 really a winning hand? I always wondered. I'm not much into women's sizes :)

ps There's no place like VDF. And I agree, Drummerworld's is the same 10 people talking amongst themselves, the in-jokes, etc.

Hi Erik,

first off, I am sorry for the loss of your friend. He must of been a good friend for it to be important enough to post about him, may he R.I.P. and a friendly hug to you.

i understand completely what you say about the other forums, well i should say forum. i use to hang at drummerworld too til i found better friends in a lower place (wink).

if you can learn by watching...youtube has some videos on single pedal speed. i just typed in "learning speed on a single bassdrum pedal " and got some vids. maybe that will help.

hang around here and you will learn alot and not just about vintage drums. all these guys who have relied to this thread....im sure if you PM'd them, they would gladly provide some pointers. beings how THIS is the friendliest drum forum there is. i would love to be able to help out but the best help i could give is to say....just practice man, practice.

Stay Wiggly,
Robyn

I know some people have been doing skype lessons. I'm a teacher. Has anyone had any experience with that?

See, this is an example of the friendliness of this place! So much eagerness to share information.

Re: DFO, I will give them another try.

Re: bass pedal speed, I found a 5-minute workout by Jared Falk and do that a couple of times a day. Very effective.

Practice is the answer, but I believe one must focus their practice. I can sit there playing a money beat for an hour every day and it won't do diddly for my ability to play doubles on the bass.

So I try to identify areas where I want to improve, then find exercises that focus on that area.

Try this simple exercise from the Master himself: (skip ahead to the 7 minute mark on the video.)

Worked for me! Simple but very effective. Enjoy.

Awesome foot exercise! I did it heel-up for one hour a day, for one whole week, over at the bass player's jam space in high school. Well our parents were *very* indulgent of our musical aspirations, but that one broke the camel's back, and I was politely asked to stop!....I can just imagine, cuz at the time I was using Evans hydraulic with no damping at all - house musta bin boomin lol.

SK I think you've found the best of all drum forums for all needs. The "General" section puts the icing on the cake. We all keep the focus on vintage drums for the mostest most part, so these digressions, as long as kept civil, seem to be fine.
