Other friendly forums about drumming? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I ask this because there are drumming subjects I would like to discuss that have nothing to do with vintage equipment, and as much as I like vintagedrumforum, I don't feel it's the place for me to make lengthy threads about how to build up single bass pedal speed or whatever.

I tried and tried with Drummerworld, but could never get past a state of New Forum Person Invisibility. Too insular. Too many in-jokes.

Things reached the point of no return for me there a few months ago when a drummer friend of mine passed away, I posted an RIP thread about it, and not a single person replied.

My last post there ever was in a subsequent thread about un-replied-to threads. I mentioned my own un-replied-to RIP thread and was again ignored. It put a sour taste in my mouth about further participation at Drummerworld.

Drumforum.org seems less cliquish, but not enough sub forums; everything winds up in the General sub, including off-topic posts.

The Pearl Drummers' Forum is actually good, and friendly, but as one might expect, everything is filtered through love of Pearl equipment. I only qualify because of my old CB700 tubs anyway, and have relatively little interest in Pearl's current products.

I've participated in plenty of online forums over the years, going back to before the www, so I like to think I know the etiquette, be cool, don't come on like a know-it-all, show interest in others' topics, etc.

Suggestions are requested. I'm used to feeling like a I have an online "home" for my hobbies.

If you want to discuss 'drumming' your best bet would be a teaching site! Someplace where people go to learn and exchange information relating to playing. I'm not sure, but a site like Drumeo will have an internal community bulletin board, but you'll have to pay to join I believe. Something along those lines may be what you're looking for. Here, we're all about the drums. Although nobody starts threads about technique, or other drumming how-to's, I have picked up a lot of tips here at VDF and even shared a few of my own without poking a stick into TommyP's cave. A little of it here and there 'in context' is ok, as long as it doesn't wander too far from the stated purpose of the site. Gotta respect Dave's wishes in that regard.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Seriously you will not find another site as friendly as this one... Spill your beans here... A wide range of topics here are read and responded to.. Lots of guys "stretch" the guidelines here.. Self included... Lots of opinions, understanding and knowledge...

Cheers

Was that you John??!! I felt sumthin' poking me!... and it 'wasn't Deb! Here's a quick comment on the query put forth by Starship Krupa:

We DO like to keep the focus on actual Vintage Drums and all the stuff that goes along with it. The actual playing of drums, technique, teaching, etc. is of course part of it to a degree. What David never wanted was a site where there was too much variation away from vintage drums. He really wanted to keep this place focused on the history, etc. However!...

... John is correct, actually both John's in this case: We do have some discussion on actual drumming, personal issues of human interest, new gadgets, videos, etc. from time to time without a problem. The key is to keep it in the GENERAL category. What happens from that point is dictated by how the thread forms/runs. So, hope this shed a little light on it for you SK, and glad you enjoy hangin' at this place too! BEST!

Did you see the " teachers lounge" section at DFO?

I had a thread here once called "about to give up" and I ended up getting tons of advice. I was impressed how guys I don't even know stepped up and gave me the encouragement to keep going. Now, I take private lessons and will never again say I'm about to give up, and I owe a small portion of my new positive attitude to guys here on VDF.

Thank you!

There you have it, Jeff; I post at midnight my time, and within 4 hours, I have 5 good dudes I have never met in person giving me advice and wishing me well.

It's nice to get the reassurance about the General section. There's not usually much stuff about technique in there, but I guess that doesn't mean such discussions are unwelcome.

I am so overdue for working with a live teacher. Been teaching myself using books and videos for all 2 1/2 years of my drumming career.

Erik, I put off private lessons way too long. I cant believe what I have learned in one month, you just cant get from a video what you do from a real live person. Internet and books are great tools of course but they don't answer questions and observe you.

Good luck to you what ever you do. If you start a thread here I'm sure guys will chime in with excersizes and videos.

Thank you!

From FFR428

Glen, the lesson is the highlight of the week, I love it. In fact right now I like it more then jamming with my band. I play pretty good but I am pretty straight forward, single stroke rolls and eight note's on the hats or ride with simple beats. My instructor is teaching me funk right now, were working on Brick House by the Commodores, jez I hate that song but I get what he is doing, getting away from simple beats. He is also teaching me to use double stroke's in fills. Last week he gave me a chart for the main beat in Brick House, now I will be working on the fill part. Its really cool, he plays the bass while I play the drums. Just cant say enough, glad you asked!

Thank you!
