Birth of the Turret Lug Confirmed?

Loading...

Hi Friends,

Last year I picked up a beautiful '53 Leedy & Ludwig time capsule kit and during our discussion on the kit here on VDF...we noticed that the cymbal arm mount on the bass drum looked like a George Way/Camco/DW turret lug. Well, last night on the Leedy Facebook group I'm a part of, someone posted a Leedy & Ludwig catalog scan from 1954 that shows my exact cymbal holder setup and it is referred to as a Turret cymbal holder! Mine is the adjustable one on the left. Just thought I would share my newfound knowledge. I would also be interested in knowing if anyone else has ever seen one of these on another Leedy & Ludwig kit. I think it's a pretty rare accessory and it works great, by the way.

Hijo de la chingada! That's an interesting piece of drum history you found there. That thing, minus the butterfly tension key on top -is- a turret lug! George Way had to have known about that cymbal mount and simply converted it to use as a lug for his drum line.

Nice detective work, Aaron! Interesting stuff. :D

Too many great drums to list here!

John...as far as I have read, George Way was still at Leedy & Ludwig at this time, so I'm guessing he invented the part and then used it as his own lug design! He was the man.

Too bad he didn't use it for his Camco floor tom leg mounts...

Never play it the same way once.

DW owns pretty much everything to Mr George Way. Every person I know who digs DW always refer to the turret lugs as the reason they like DW. Very few say anything about their sound (which to me is nothing spectacular).

This is also where the George way/ camco shells came from, Jasper shells supplied Leedy Ludwig shells also.

George Way worked for Leedy during the 20s and 30s. He invented a lot of stuff.
