Ludwig Rail Mount Last viewed: 2 hours ago

John, this has nothing to do with trusting you, believe it or not, I have heard of this, but I've never seen anyone use this method on a vintage kit.

What does it matter if anybody, or nobody else has ever used it? It's a (possible) solution to the problem you posed. It doesn't always work, but it -does work- sometimes depending on the drum. I thought you needed a solution, I just didn't know it had to be one that matched the qualifier of being a technique that has been used on vintage drums by other people you know.

Just trying to help, man. No big deal. Free advice is worth every penny you pay for it. Take it or leave it, your call.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I'll try it, although I think it will look a bit odd.

It will look a bit odd, but hey, whose gonna notice. Never tried this, but I will now, if something's choking. It's kind of like turning one of your floor tom legs upside down to get a better sound. Or leave it and try mounting the tom higher up on the l-arm to get the sweet spot

Just as I suspected, it can't be done on a vintage kit with the rail mount, the arm won't go high enough off the kick to mount the tom from the top.

What makes the deal possible, and what seems to not be the case in your pic, is that the arm usually angles out from the rail a bit, and usually from the end of the rail, so that there is nothing blocking the tom from mounting. However, I just tried it on my Club Date rail mount and it is still very problematic.

You know what totally works though? Clamping the L-arm into the tom bracket first, and *then* sliding the L-arm into the rail arm.

My experience has been that this does indeed lessen the choking effect of mounting the tom on a rail.

This is what you want to try......getting the drum high up on the L-arm.

OK, I was able to hang the tom from the top of the tom mount, but it puts the tom a bit too far to my left and low. I actually got the tom to resonate more with the original way I was mounting it by getting a coated ambassador, it sounds fine now, go figure.

Cool. I have on occasion been able to "tune out" the choke effect. Little quarter turns all around until the drum opens up, usually while standing in front of the kit. Somehow it also makes sense that putting a coated head on there would help...

I recommend a coated Remo Emperor on top with a Diplomat on the bottom. Seems to work for me but we need to remember that everyone tunes their drum differently.
