I'm not convinced that Fletcher’s little smile at Andrew in the ending scene is satisfaction that Andrew has proven himself and has finally “made it”. I think Fletcher is pleased with himself that he has finally achieved his own personal, life’s goal of creating the next Charlie Parker.

Thanks, Mike. Wow, I never saw it that way, but it makes sense. Fletcher is not really happy for Andrew, he's only happy for himself. Maybe that's why they only showed his cheeks rise up and not the full smile with his mouth. Andrew was just a pawn/tool supporting Fletcher's life long goal.

Jeff-Mike, its ok. reading all this actually makes me want to see the movie even more.

So he breaks up with his girlfriend....guys are dumb like that. :)

ive been watching clips on youtube and am definitely gonna rent this movie soon.

In the scene where Fletcher makes the drummers work the "double time swing" or whatever it is, until they have got it, I can't make out what they are trying to do - it just sounds like the worst speed-metal drumming ever, not helped at all by the way too boomy sound.

Can someone point me to a YT link showing what the thing is they were trying to master?

Double time is doubling a rhythm pattern within its original bar structure.

I think you're referring to the scene where Neiman 'wasn't on (Fletchers) time.' Fletcher was telling him that the quarter note = 102 bpm. Fletcher was demanding that (Neiman) keep accurate -metronomic- time. That's what all the "Am I rushing, or am I late" slappy face stuff was all about.

Thanks John! I do know what double time means generally - it was the drumming in the scene that threw me off. The clip you linked to is helpful.

The scene I'm referring to is the one in which Fletcher sends the other musicians from the room while the 3 drummers work on double time swing. I remember turning to my partner Michelle and saying "WTF are these guys doing?!" lol

Now, check out this *hilarious* clip from a drummer who apparently felt the same way as I did. Oh, I laughed out loud I did!
