I just saw the movie Whiplash, does anyone know who played the actual drum parts? Especially the solo on Caravan at the end of the movie.
Whiplash
The March issue of Modern Drummer has a one page review of the movie. Miles Teller plays the drummer in the movie. He is a real life drummer does some playing in the movie. They also say they used a drummer double in some spots.
I'm sure they used a professional drummer on the soundtrack, that wasn't Miles Teller.
Nate Lang. http://www.people.com/article/miles-teller-drums-whiplash

Ok, maybe I'm not being clear about my question, I want to know who was playing the recorded drums in the movie and soundtrack. I know Miles Teller was a drummer before becoming an actor and he did do the visual effects of playing the drums in the movie, but I'm sure he didn't play on the actual soundtrack. Am I wrong?
I just watched the film as well and had the same exact question.
I liked the film, it was entertaining. Actually gave me some inspiration to practice!
Thank you!

VM2K is correct... sort of! Nate Lang was brought in to HELP/COACH Miles Teller with a lot of the drumming.. but .. Miles Teller DID in fact play all the drum parts himself, with one big BUT:
The drum parts, including his solo in "Caravan" were played by Miles Teller in chunks/pieces, and then edited together to create a seamless final product. So, technically yes, Miles Teller played all the parts, but not in one take. The "Caravan" solo took TWO DAYS alone to shoot just the drum solo. All played in pieces/sections by Miles Teller, and then put together with some incredible editing!

There is -still- an unnamed professional drummer that contributed to the sound track who has not been credited. In an interview the director stated that Miles was responsible for 90% (and he hesitated as he came up with a number,) leaving the creation of at least 10% of the drum sound track unaccounted for. I have a feeling he pulled that 90% number out of his as$ in order to make his star look as good as he can make him. The real percentage of the soundtrack played by Miles could be anything.
Somebody is keeping the name of a contributing drummer under wraps. Why? Who knows. I am convinced however that little Miles from Pennsylvania isn't an undiscovered virtuoso drummer... he had plenty of help on that sound track from somebody. Even if it was only 10% help. 10% is what can make the difference between a Buddy Rich performance and that of a lesser musician.
Just an opinion...

Any of you pro drummers ever bleed like that?
How many guys on this forum can read and play that kind of music? It sounds very complicated. I know I will never get to that level.
Thank you!
