`65 Slingerland Kit restoration Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I've been wanting a vintage Slingerland kit for gigging and finally bit the bullet. I've always been partial to Red Glitter because my first drum kit when I was a teen was a red sparkle Slingerland 3 piece, 22" 12" 16". A similar one showed-up on ebay and I bought it at a great price. All the drums have maple interiors and are in great shape. The shells are all stamped 1965. The kit has a virgin bass drum and it used a hoop clamp bracket for the tom, which only leaves 2 small mounting holes in tom. All original hardware, COB rims, great chrome. So far I've stripped all the hardware off the shells and soaked everything in Evaporust which cleaned everything nicely. I've started working on the shells and found a thin film of grunge that has been coming off with polishing. I've tried Novus #2 originally but I find it leaves a bit of haze so I tried Turtle Wax Color Back with a small orbital palm polisher, which works very well. The Color Back is a combination polish / carnuba wax and it's been working surprisingly well.

Bass hoops will need to be sanded / repainted. One of the hoop inlays is missing a short chunk, maybe 16". If anyone has some red glitter hoop inlay to sell, let me know. I don't think the new stuff is at all close to the old stuff.

One problem I've noticed is some loose wrap on the bass drum where the upper piece of wrap overlaps the small lower piece just below the spur. The upper piece has detached slightly from the surface of the lower piece due to shrinkage and a small section of the lower has detached from the shell so this will be a 2-part re-gluing process.

I'll be posting more pics here of the process.

Any suggestions for re-gluing would be helpful. I've re-wrapped 5-6 drums using the 3M contact adhesive so I'm familiar with the process. Just not sure how to clean the old adhesive from the wrap without damaging or melting the old wrap.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

That is going to be really nice Mark. the photos give it a deep vintage fade look. As to the process of correcting the wrap, there are guys here that will respond. Lot's of guys who know how to deal with that. Good luck on it and keep those resto photos coming.

Best you are going to love the sound too, especially with the the COB stick saver hoops!

Is the Color Back polish the stuff with the coloring actually in the polish?

In your case, is the polish a red color in the container?

No. I think you're referring to "Color Magic" which is a color pigmented cleaner/wax.

This is "Color Back" and is meant for removing oxidation and bringing back some gloss. More aggressive than a regular cleaner wax.

I picked-up some Meguiar's PlastX at lunchtime today. Will give it a try tonight and report back the results.

Yes, the kit was advertised as having a 13" tom but it turned out to be a 12".

I'll be keeping my eye out for a nice matching 13" (w/maple interior).

I tried Mequires PlastX plastic polish tonight and it really worked great at eliminating the haze and restoring the clarity to the clear finish. They market this stuff for plastic headlight covers. The sparkle really "pops" through the clear layer now. Here's a pic of the floor tom (no wax). Bought the PlastX at Menards for around $7. Good stuff.

I'm using a cheap random orbit palm polisher from Harbor Freight. Makes easy work of the job and the orbital motion means it's easy on the surface.

Hmm. That's interesting. I figured the red had just darkened with age.

The Slingerland Vintage Drum Guide lists Maroon as being produced between `70-`75, yet these are all stamped `65 inside.
