Fibes head choice.

Hey guys, what are your thoughts on using the remo clear heads with the black dot on my Fibes kit.

Thank you!

Well, the reason I ask is because some of the drums came with the black dot heads. The bass drum has a Rogers black dot batter and an original Fibes reso head. When I set these up after the restoration was done I thought they sounded horrible. So I blame these clear heads but also wondering if purchasing new coated heads would be worth the money. I have two felt strips on the bass batter side, probably need them on the reso side as well, just dont have any extra at the moment.

So, just wondering if anyone plays Fibes if they had any advice.

Thanks Jim, that is interesting info. Steve is using these on Sonor drums though? I just kind of wonder if the fiberglass shells with metal wrap is what I am not liking.

I play a Fibes fiberglass with metal wrap. It's a Martin bop kit with copper wrap 18, 12, 13, 14, 16. I have Remo vintage ambers on top and clear ambers on the bottom very happy with the sound. Warm tone and wide tuning range.

Thank you! I will look into those.

I bet that is one beautiful kit, love the copper!

It was my dad's bought new in the 70's originally only 18, 12, 14 I added the 13 and 16. My nephew had it for a while and it got trashed but when I got it I restored as best I could and now I play it 2 or 3 times a week. 16 is missing in this pic.

johnl, thanks for the picture. That is a very nice looking kit. I love that copper finish that Fibes had back in the day. A buddy of miine had a Fibes kit in copper and man it was a beauty.

I took my kit to band practice last Tuesday with the black dot heads. I totally expected to be disappointed but they sounded pretty good. I do think that some coated remo ambassadors or emperors would be much better so that's what I will try next. It was fun to play the Fibes kit and everyone really thought they were cool, glad I took the time to swap out the kits in the practice room.

Thank you!
