Camco Oaklawn 6.5x14 Score! Last viewed: 40 minutes ago

Thanks to an early morning tip from JoLo I scored an Oaklawn oval badge 6.5x14 in natural maple (sorry David). It was 1.5 hours aWAY from me. My only dilema is that I was stuck at work with no idea of when I was going to be cut to go home.

I got a hold of the owner thru the Craig'slist ad. He had already received quite a few contacts as his asking price was $175! He needed me to commit over the phone to basically buy the drum sight unseen with the exception of some poor pics he had uploaded. I threw him an extra $25 to hold the drum for me.

Well I got to his place around 7:15pm and bought the drum. It needs some work and has 3 extra holes from a Slingerland strainer. But for $200 I can't complain except I had to be at work by 3:32 am the next day. I'll post pics shortly.

Well it took me awhile but she's all clean and with correct parts. Although I'm using a GW butt plate as the Camco one I have is too wide, weird! I also decided to use a spare set of COB hoops that I had since the original hoops are pretty rough. This one also has problems with splaying. So now I figured out what is going on here. The lugs need the added spacing that wrap provides. W/O it, it causes serious splaying of the rods. On 5x14s it's not that noticeable but on the 6.5x14 things get really out of whack fast! These drums should be 16 lug drums to help compensate which would've been far cheaper than tooling special deeper lugs. I may in fact try using bass drum washers on one of these to see if that helps.

Bit of splay here but doesn't affect the sound (and I suspect not all the lugs are Camco)

Very nice! congrats to you. Couple of questions for you, when you say splaying, your talking about the tension rods are not parallel to the drum shell, correct? I found on my Camco kit that there are a couple of rods that I cant get the key to engage properly making it very difficult to tune. Could the problem be the rims are not correct?

And, you say you suspect that some of your lugs may not be Camco. What else would they be? Could they be DW lugs or a reproduction?

Sorry for the questions, I am still struggling with restoring my kit. Again, cool drum, congrats!

Thank you!
