Good question drumguy, thanks for adding to the discussion.

So do they still build these said drums the same way they did back in the day?

more like they did in the 70's they even are still using the original molds from the old Chicago plant. Ludwig does not make any of their metal products though, They don't have a foundry at the plant that is all sourced out.

Yes,they farm those shells out,I think mainly because the plating process is toxic and kind of an environmental heavy metals nightmare. It's also very specialized work, especially the black nickel used in the Black beauty snares.Still made in the US though

I never really got an answer as to where the metal shells really come from. all the lugs, fittings, stands, pedals etc are from off shore, in the plant was a wall of boxes with made in china stamped all over them. Steve cotton the original plant manager for the monroe plant told me this, then took me to the wall of made in china boxes, it broke my heart to see that.

I think most ,if not all hardware, lugs are made overseas these days. The only drum company, that I know of,that makes their lugs in house,is Guru, which is a UK based, boutique drum company.Their stuff is not off the shelf, and the build and sound quality is just way up there.Nothing mass produced comes close.
