The EPA has made it tough on foundrys and plating factorys. The town I'm in here is a old industrial town as much of CT once was. Dupont and Exide each had factory here and it cost millions to clean each site to be redeveloped. We had a old plating factory close to us. They mainly did instrument plating but also some Gov work during the war years. They had a pit they dumped waste lead and mercury into for some 30 years until the EPA came to light in the 70's. The land sat dorment for years. Developers found a 500' toxic waste plume in the shale layer below the surface. They left it there. Kind of ironic they built a Whole Foods on it. This site cost 3 million to cleanup. Same with a new Railroad station the town put in. It was partially build on a old foundry site. Tons of old core sand had to be removed etc..... another VERY expensive site cleanup in the millions. These unforeseen costs made each project go belly up until new investors came in. This the story in many citys and towns here. I'm sure the same goes across the country. Sorry to get OT here but just some insight on the way thing used to be. And the damage left behind.
