best year for ludwigs Last viewed: 9 hours ago

From airborneSFC

I dig early 60's Ludwigs and of course WFL drums. The quality of the WFL era drums were outstanding. The new legacy line is really neat also. My dream is still a Joe Morello style setup. Although honestly I will take any drums if I could play like Joe Morello!!!

I've got the keystone Morello setup! Silver.

I really love those Gold Sparkle Ludwigs of mine, but I have a 1981 Ludwig Silver Sparkle

6 ply Maple Hollywood set that sounds fantastic too. It lives in my recording studio. I keep threatening to take it out on a gig as it has not been on one in over 20 years.

My favorite sets are Legacy shells (2007-2014) and "trans time", 1958-1963.

I can't really say an year for sure. There have been great drums from almost any of the years. Currently I play a 22,13,16 classic maple set and it sounds absolutely awesome. I love the WFL drums too but my only complaint about 50's WFL drums is the rail. I don't care for the two bolt rail and I hate the spot it was put on 50's WFL's. The 60's 4 bolt rail is much better IMO and the positioning is perfect.

I also hear people complain about "Ringo era" drums but I have only really had one bad apple out of many sets. It's funny too because it was a 1966 champagne sparkle down beat in the most pristine amazing champagne sparkle wrap ever and if you looked at the lugs they were all drilled crooked.(Go figure!) I could never get it to tune right.

If the wrap was trashed or it had extra holes it probably would have sounded amazing! Lol...

Every other set I have had has been awesome though and I have had many over the years.

here is a close up of my cob hoops 1962 jazz fest from my blue note btw it is then best sounding jazz fest i have ...

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Gary - I know you meant 'SBP' Jazzfest! Here is the brother to your drum, that happens to live at -my- house. :p

Mikey Layton has a couple of these, including the Pioneer version! Sweet snares.

Too many great drums to list here!

I like the early 60's Ludwig's myself. Now I am thinking of taking these out next gig. Haven't in a while. Nickel lugs. The seller bought the Bass drum and jazz fest in 1958 and added the toms in 60 and 62. He let someone borrow the jazz fest and never saw it again, or I would have got that too. Ohh well. He played them all those years and was tired of them so I swapped him a inexpensive new ddrum kit I got off CL for them.

The Landshark Banner.

The guy wanted me to rewrap those gold sparkle drums for him because he was "tired" of them and the color. He had them since 1958.

No way I was going to do that so I had this beautiful New Pewter sparkle ddrum kit I had $199 invested and said look, if your tired of them I will swap you this new kit for them. And we were both happy campers.

The ddrum was really nice looking with matching snare. The Ludwigs were filthy, had coffee or something spilled down one side of the bass drum, hoops had little paint left, nasty beat up heads. Wasn't sure the stain would come off the bass drum. But alas, they cleaned up nice. He also threw in a 8"x12" Ludwig 3 ply early 70's rewrapped gold sparkle tom too.

Nice job. I guess it pays to have a cheap, new kit on hand at all times.
