Mitchell/Moon/Appice 60's tuning Last viewed: 5 hours ago

that very open, resonant sound of drummers from the 60's, any advice on tuning to get this kind of sound? is it tuning both heads the same on the tom's for example? how high am I going? any notes with any particular drum? obviously there's no muffling

Here's a more modern example from 2005 as well (to prove it can be done in the modern age!)

In my modest experience, it's coated Ambassadors top and bottom, tuned to a vaguely same tone. The ideal pitch is unique to each drum, I think.

Your mileage will vary based on the drum and how it is struck, but I get superb results on three-ply mid 1970s Slingerlands with coated Ambassador batters and clear Diplomat resonants.

I tune the bottom head first to where the drum wants to be. Then I tune the top head to match. Once I get there, I back the top head town about a sixteenth of a turn (maybe a bit more on the floor tom).

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

The tuning was pretty much wide open with little or no muffling so you got that natural ring from each drum.As someone mentioned before Ambassadors top and bottom and use your ear for that vintage sound.Really aren`t any tricks here-that was a time of just letting the drums sing in their natural resonance, but try tuning the reso head a quarter turn lower and adjust from there.Great song by the way and good luck.

Most of those guys in the 60's tuned their drums higher. I think it was partly because of them listening to jazz drummers and partly because of the way the drums were built in those days. Ludwig and Slingerland had rounded bearing edges that made a lot of contact with the head. Unless you wanted a thud sound, you pretty much had to tune those drums higher to get a good ring. Rogers had sharper edges and tended to sing more than their competitors.

Then came the 70's and all drum tone was thrown out the window.DOH
