Rant: "Upgrading" Vintage Drums Last viewed: 1 hour ago

From mchair303

So I'll pose this: Will mods to modern drums hurt their value 30 years from now? I don't think so, because I don't see too many modern drums (those without any special provenance) attaining any kind of collectability status, any more than a new Honda Accord becoming collectable 30 years from now.

Maybe they might. Here's my opinion ....

As the 50's and 60's drums get more scarce/non-existent, the 70's and 80's drums are going to be the next craze. We are starting to see it more now with the mid to late 70's Rogers Big R drums. They get a bad wrap, but they are still the 5-ply re-ringed shells that sing. Heck, just look at the increased interest in MIJ drums. Look at all of the times we see a posting about someone's latest Star kit purchase for sub-$100.

Plus, as the drummer population shifts generations, there will also be a shift in what is "vintage". This will have an affect on the interest in older drums. Just think of the quote "I'm looking for a kit, because that's what I had when I was young and first started playing drums."

Does putting Pearl Iso Feet on my Fibes floor tom qualify....? It didn't have any rubbers on the legs when I got the kit and it suffered accordingly.

No that is a real upgrade that has no mods to the original design that can be changed back to original.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

You mentioned "But at the same time, drummers didn't play like Dave Grohl back then either."... I'd say if were talking post 50s, Moon and Bonham were definitely playing in the fashion that Grohl does.

You know, I bought my first Camco kit used in 1973. The goober that owned them previously painted the interior of the bass drum flat black.

Since Camco drums were rare---even back then---and I knew what they were, I swallowed hard and bought them.

I travelled with them for 8 years using all Camco hardware that held up marvelously. I knew better than to "upgrade" something that worked. I still have the kit. If I ever sell them, I'll knock off $50 for the black paint........or, is there a clear maple finish shelf paper available that I can wrap the interior with?

I grew up with a Camco pedal before ever knowing what Camco drums were. These were the late 80's early 90's when the internet was just becoming popular. If only I knew as a kid the drums to go after oh man. I am willing to bet back then I could have scored any number of "vintage" kits for next to nothing. Somewhat like when I was living in Germany and never thought to pickup a nice set or two of Teardrops.

That is an arguable point. I think there are plenty of guys that play harder than either Bonham or Moon currently. Certainly as a whole, players play much harder now than in the 50's and 60's. Of course you will note that both Bonham and Moon opted for Swivo hardware on their Premier and Ludwig kits respectively and eventually Bonham decided on a snare stand as his rack tom got bigger and consider the modifications (reinforcements) done to the interior of Moon's kits at the factory; I believe starting with the Pictures of Lilly kit. And didn't he also have two Swivo mounts in one tom?

Quoting tnsquint..

"Honestly, I don't know why we get so upset about that. We all know that much of the hardware (specifically the mounting hardware) was nearly useless for many of these brands with only a few exceptions. Drummers started playing harder and playing more regularly and the filmsy mounts provided with a lot of kits were not up to the task. Guys made substitutions because they had to. Simple as that."

That was me after 2 sets of Slingo FT leg mounts were replaced.. after that I had no more confidence in them for a working kit, so I went generic. I am not a collector as such so it does not bother me.

Cheers
