Is this a Supraphonic or a Super Ludwig Snare? Last viewed: 1 minute ago

No, it's real real light. I always thought it was brass but one day, I picked it up after picking up my sound king brass snare and said to myself, "If this is brass, it's the lightest damn brass drum I have ever felt". That's when I tore it down to detail it. I did not weigh the shell but it was feather-light.

Plus, the brass shells have a seam. This one is seamless.

Is yours an aluminum shell, also?

Yes, it's aluminum.

Rob's book isn't necessarily 100% accurate either (maybe 99% though, he does good work).

Rob's book is out of date, although still a great reference guide. Rob (as in Rebeats) published a new guide in 2013 written by Richard Gier. The new guide is based on much more data thanks to all the information now available on drum forums and eBay, etc.

The new guide is available on eBay:

and at Rebeats. This is essential to own if you want to be up with the play.

@ KapperDog:

Pre serial badges are now associated with date stamped drums into the 4th quarter of 1963. I've got a November example. It's in the new guide.

So this is actually a bit of a rare drum right? I mean how many pre-serial crimped bed Supras did they make I wonder? I know Ludwig were mass producers, but I've never seen one.

I don't know about rare, but Rob Cook's book mentioned that only a few early Supras were made from aluminum. So, maybe rare but the brass seems to be more desirable.

Thanks to everyone for all the info and help.

I found a "before" pic of the snare from when I bought it a year or so ago.

Did you mean a few early Supras were made of Brass? Because almost every Supra made since 1962 is aluminum....so they are not particularly rare.
