Got my first set of Ludwigs! Last viewed: 9 hours ago

I posted a few days ago about a really nice 4-piece Ludwig set at Guitar Center near me, and it looked so good in person I had to question to myself if it were all original, because it was a pristine keystone kit. It was stated to be a 1967 Gold Sparkle, and priced at $1200 so while not cheap, also somewhat below what the market is setting these kits at in really nice condition. I was in the store tonight to grab a pair of sticks and showing my wife the kit to use as an example of what I was looking for, and she bought it for me....

Eye Ball

So... I did my best to inspect while at the store, had them remove the heads so I can check out the interiors and the wrap because it did look way too clean to be an original wrap, but the keystone badges didn't look to be tampered with. I asked what the original owner traded it in for, and he said he knows the owner (which I won't publicize here, but if I need to know any details I'm sure I could contact him. He may even be a member here, don't know). The wrap does go into the ply, so it would seem original. The interiors were very clean, but nowhere could I find a date stamp, so I'm not sure how it was decided it was a '67, and the only answer to that I got was the original owner said it was. So, being that I can "sort-of" match it up with the 1967 Hollywood kit in the catalog with color and everything, that it what I'll assume it is. Here are some "just brought it in the house" pics:

The date came from the serial numbers on the badges.

12" tom for example of wrap (all look pretty much the same):

The sizes are 12/13/16/22 and the 16 is missing the baseball bat, so I will need to get one of those. I have to go back and check the other serial numbers but the one pictured in the first post appears to fall in 1966 somewhere. Again, interiors look so clean I had to wonder if the kit was re-painted at some point, and re-wrapped. But if you look ever so carefully you can see the difference in the color of the wrap under the hoops.

My questions are:

-I know Ludwig QC was not it's best during those years. It would be safe to assume these never had an internal date stamp because they were serial Keystones?

-Are the tightening bolts on the toms original to the kit? I was expecting wingnuts, but they're the same on both and on the mount arm.

-Based on the pics I have so far, can anyone tell me anything I could be missing?

At this point it's more curiosity than anything, because either way I'm happy with it and it was a gift so I will enjoy them regardless.

Beautiful kit! Your going to love those. What a nice wife. I am just thinking the bass drum tom post is 70's because of the logo. I don't think they used that logo in the mid 60's. Doesn't matter. I would Hang on to that kit.

Thanks guys. My wife has always been good to me about my hobbies and has laid out good money over the years to get me the things I wanted. The best part is she hates drums! But my daughter is turning 1 in a week and I've already got her banging on the other kit, and we recently got her a Remo gathering drum to pound on and she's pretty coordinated for her age, so we hope that continues. Believe me, 1200 bucks is a lot of money to us so, that was kind and generous.

The double tom mount would be the 1966 aluminum one that matches the BD plate<(which has an after market tightener BTW!)

Yes,the tom mounts are correct ones...you need a Ludwig wrench (or..vise grips) to tighten...

I have 2 of the correct wrenches......PM me if needed...

BEAUTIFUL kit!Eye Ball

You will get compliments on it..both sound and looks wise....
