Well, the wood is Vintage Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I finally built a wood shell drum.

My buddy won this raw shell at the "Hollywood Drum Show" in 2011.

I think they were giving it away because it was slightly undersized.

See splay in rods, even with gaskets, which I do not normally use.

Well, he had it hanging, unbuilt, on a peg for 3 years, so I had to do something about it.

So, I took it.

The wood came from really old oak barrels, or something. Stave shell.

Now 3 7/8" by 13".

I cannot remember the name of the small independent company that made these.

They had a whole kit at the show. Small sizes, very cool.

Nice people.

Gibralter, Beer Tap Strainer.

The strainer did not come with mounting screws. What?

5 mm, 8 pitch. I had some.

Lugs are vintage TAMA.

Yes, I sometimes work with shells other than Fiberglass.

I am giving it to my buddy tomorrow.

He has helped me out many times with my Pro Tools Rig.

So I am tryin to give a little back.

I don't know what Oak sounds like, but that is one killer looking drum. Great thank you gift for your buddy! Man, I have to do something really nice for you some time... I'd love getting a thank you gift as sweet as this one!

Very cool drum. Excellent job as per your usual.

John

Very nice. Tuning range should be pretty spectacular with that undersized shell.

One more thought on this shell and the Hollywood Drum Show.

I went to the HDS on a Saturday.

They had raffles, so I bought 2 tickets.

Guys were walking out of there with really killer snare drums, cymbals

all kinds of great stuff won from the raffle.

It was kind of exciting at drawing time.

I did not win anything that day. But I saw guys with like 75 tickets in their hands.

For Sunday I had purchased tickets for my buddy and his son to come to the show and meet me there.

I thought, lets make this fun for my 2 guests.

I bought them 15 or 20 raffle tickets apiece.

They were only a buck.

Well, there numbers were called, a lot, seemed like almost every time.

They won so much stuff, they were embarrassed and did not want to go up to the stage anymore. I told them they had to.

I won a snare drum soft case that day that I will be delivering my friends new drum in that case today.

I really miss the Hollywood Drum Show.

It was FUN.

BTW this drum is 3 7/8 x 13

Where did you get that strainer? It's not on their website.

That's a beautiful drum. I bet it sounds great too. I have a 3"x13" Ludwig Birch Piccolo snare and it has a 12 strand strainer on it, which is original to the drum.

Kind of thin. I am thinking of putting one on there like the one on that drum.

Mine cuts and is loud but wonder if it would sound better with that wide strand?

Anyone have any experience with either. I always thought that 12 strand was a little wimpy. Your friend is going to have a happy fit when he see's that drum.

From teverson-sr

Where did you get that strainer? It's not on their website.

It was on ebay.

From Chicago Music Exchange.

Gibralter Dunnette George Way Snare Throw-Off and Butt Plate

Or "Beer Tap" Strainer.

You may be able to deal directly with Chicago Music Exchange.
