Ludwig Supraphonic snare Last viewed: 15 minutes ago

Just bought a 2001-2003 Pearl Export kit online. 5 pc kit with DW5000 pedal, good Pacific/Pearl hardware, Pacific Throne, 4 Zildjian ZBT cymbals & HH, two snares, one a Pearl but the other chrome beauty a Ludwig 6.5x14 Supraphonic I just found out. $700 paid for all. Good deal me thinks. But apparently this Ludwig snare is worth some change. Blue/green badge Serial on it is 1899660. The Ludalloy badge still inside. I haven't played in 30 years so my drum knowledge is wanting. Any info on the Ludwig snare is appreciated.

To answer your post... the 6.5 x 14 Supra is worth as much as you spent on the entire kit! In nice clean, working condition, those snares can command $550. to $650. on a bad day.

Get back into playing! Treat yourself to Tommy Igoe's video; Great Hands For a Lifetime, and start playing along. You'll be back wailing away on your drums in no time flat.

I failed to mention the snare is not in the best shape. Much surface rust. I took off the Ludwig Rocker head to inspect and possibly clean. I think the reso head is the original! I'm thinking some fine steel wool I use to clean my aluminum rims would suffice but maybe you have some suggestions.

Do not use steel wool under any circumstances! Use good rust remover and chrome polish.

Do not use steel wool. Even the finest grade will still scratch. Find a good chrome cleaner/polish and take your time.

Carefully take apart the drum and get it down to a bare shell. Since the shell is pitted, there will be rough and raised pieces sticking up. I have heard other members using a wooden popsicle stick to gently knock off some of the loose edges. Get a bag of soft cloths. Knocking off some of the rough flaking chrome helps when you start using the chrome cleaner, because the cloth is going to catch on the shell. Keep an eye on the condition of the cloth while you are cleaning. It's also going to start collecting small pieces of chrome, which will scratch the shell. So change to a new cloth frequently.

You'll be surprised at how well your snare will clean up. Post some pictures when your done.

HA popsicle sticks and rags I have plenty of. I used to gold plate so believe I have some chrome cleaner as well. Thanks for the advice. Any idea on the year/series of the snare?
