90's Era Slingerland Shells Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I stumbled across a deal yesterday that I could not pass up. Picked up a early 90's era set of Slingies for $100. Problem for me is that they are a standard five piece configuration with just one Floor Tom. I'd like to augment this kit with a second 14" diameter floor tom.

I'll probably never find one on eBay or here, so I was thinking to build my own. I believe Slingerland drums from that era used Keller maple shells, which are of course very easy to find from a variety of drum supply houses. Can anyone here confirm that for me? That is am I correct in that these are probably Keller shells and that modern Keller shells from a dealer would be pretty similar?

Can't confirm if they used Keller shells or not, but for $100 that was a fantastic deal! I think Gretsch owned them from like mid-80's to mid-90's, so the shells just may be Keller maple shells. Hopefully one of the Slingerland experts someone will chime in here.

Actually I did a little more research and found out first, that these were made in 1994, a very good year. That's the year that Gibson took them over. When Gretsch had them, they were not using Keller shells, they were using cheap Japanese shells and manufacturing overseas.

Gibson, brought production back to the US and did use Keller shells, so yup these are 100% Keller maple shells. I'm stoked, this was an ever better deal than I thought!

If these are Nashville era Slingerland's, you got away with robbery. Very highly regarded drums. Love to see some pics.

They were also distributed by HSS in the early 90's. a shop that I worked at carried Sonor and SABIAN which were also distributed by HSS. Slingerland's lite series drums has sizes very simular to Sonor's Hilite series.

Look here. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_drumsets_1992-2.htm

I have the flyer for the Artist series somewhere, those were Mohogany with one ply of maple on the inside and one ply on the outside as I recall.

I almost ordered one in '93 but I was told i had to wait to get them special ordered without the pearl style 7/8" Tom brackets. Next thing I knew we couldn't get them anymore.

Here are some that appear to be fairly recent I came across on CL. He even references that static site that Gibson won't take down. I have no connection to this ad

http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/3943817275.html

Slingerland Studio King 4pc Drumset (Sugar Land, TX)

No longer made Slingerland Studio King 4 piece Drumset. Sizes are as follows:

8x12 with vibraband and mount (die cast hoops)

16x16 Floor Tom with legs and mounts (die cast hoops)

16x22 Bass Drum (virgin)

5x14 Snare Drum (die cast hoops)

Finish is white (blueish) marine pearl and has some glue residue near the seems. Comes with new Evans heads and Factory Slingerland heads.

You can learn more info at:

These are great sounding drums and were retailing for more than dw kits back in their hayday.
