Picked up a Ludwig Piccolo (downbeat) - repainted BLACK Last viewed: 5 seconds ago

I'm traveling in a small town and found this on Craigslist. Price was right... Pre-Serial number with very heavy black paint covering gold sparkle wrap. 8 lug, 14 inch. Tone control is missing - would like to know what would have been original.

Thanks

Jim

I hate to see painted over drums. Hope the paint removal is easy for you.

Was it painted using a dead chicken as an applicator?

Nice find in a cool Finnish too. Looks like a lot of elbow grease in your future.

As far as tone control it depends on the year of drum. Im sure the date stamp isnt on the inside since the drum was painted on the outside.

Although I'm not too sure with downbeat snares, the badge can usually zero in the approximate year and tone control type.

WFL or transition badge: round felt with round knob.( late 50's early 60's)

Ludwig embossed keystone with no serial: baseball bat with red felt.(63-64)

Ludwig embossed keystone with serial: baseball bat with white felt. (65-67)

Ludwig embossed keystone with serial: round felt with round knob (68-70)

And of course there's overlap and I'm sure my years aren't 100% correct, but then again nothing with Ludwig is ever 100% and there is always exceptions to the rules.

I like Drums...
1963 Ludwig Downbeat Champagne Sparkle
1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl
1968 Gretsch round badge modern jazz orange stain
1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear
1981 Gretsch SSB Gran Prix Rosewood
1987 Yamaha Turbo Tour Custom Mellow Yellow
1991 Pearl Export Ferrari Red

And now looking again at your post, no serial keystone, not to mention you hold the tittle of guru...

I should be asking you questions.

Looks like several coats of paint applied with a brush. The paint is very thick.

Not looking forward to this job.

Thanks

Black paint - gone! I still need to replace some incorrect parts and repaint the interior, but I just couldn't resist putting it together and taking it out for a spin tonight.

Wow, beautiful! So what method did you use to remove the paint and keep that wrap beautiful? Gold sparkle looks great. My goodness why would anyone, paint, over that beautiful wrap?
