I once had a 1959 transition badge Ludwig kit that was the best-sounding kit I've EVER played to this day.
Best sounding drums 1900-1959
1966 Kent Kit
1969 Ludwig Standard Kit
1970 Rogers Power Tone Kit
1970's Ludwig Vistalite Kit
1994 Yamaha Maple Custom
2010 Yamaha Maple Custom
28 assorted snares (including some real crap)
and 1 really nice K Zildjian Istanbul
Earl Palmer's Rogers (NOLA and LA)
Well, half a century. So, you're half correct. =D

I'm lucky enough to own TWO of the best sounding drum sets from 1900-1959. My '58 Ludwig sounds fantastic, as does my '49 Leedy.
More often than not it's the drummer who makes a drumset sound good.
Yep. I agree. Although, I think the OP was looking for examples of "well recorded drums" that focused on the type and brand. I mean, Buddy made a set of Trixon VOX drums sound magnificent (The New One). And I never thought they were particularly well-made or had great quality.
But yes: a drummer makes his own sound, and some can do it in spite of what they may have to play!
Gretsch / Slingerland / Rogers / Leedy / Ludwig, What Colour Do You Like, I Love Them All / COB 400 the standard still today, what a great site this is X
Thanks for the responses!!
When I posted this had just noticed my Slingy 13" large beavertail lug. 3 internal ring tom sounds a bunch better than the Slingy 13" small lug two bearing ring tom.
All good because the small lug likes tuned a little high and the large lug down a tad. I get away with having 2 13" toms :-) Understand sound is subjective.
Appears I need to get a Gretsch and /or Rogers kit. Are the 19xx's better than 195x? What year should I look for, either brand?
Thanks everyone!!

Easy question for me..... 1959 was a very good year by George!
