Hi Folks,
Just want to share some pics and info on this fine drum.
For my entire drumming life, I've been dreaming of one of these. The past weeks, I sold some gear to finally get me a Ludwig Black Beauty.
Being a vintage drum enthusiast and a child of the seventies, I always wanted a blue olive badge from the late 70's "re-introduction" period. The second criteria was that it had to be 6.5". Third, I like the have the possibility of using a tone control muffler when I need it and I don't see them on the newer BB's.
So here she is,... a 1979 brass 6.5" Super Sensitive.
It didn't come cheap but still a bit under the high European prices for a new BB 6.5" SS.
Overall, the drum is in great shape with only here and there some minor discoloring in the black finish. (see pic 3) The strainer mechanisms have a few non original screws on them but I'm not to bothered by that.
To soften the "ring" a bit, I swapped the coated Ambassador for a Coated CS and it did the job.
I must admit that I was a bit reluctant on the fact that it wasn't a regular P-85 drum and it took me some time to understand how to get the snares right but once I realized that they only require just enough tension, the drum opened up and sounded phenomenal. Already a tiny bit of over tensioning will start to choke the drum,... I guess that's the nature of the SS beast.
Please join in with good advice and info,...
