1979 Black Beauty SS

Hi Folks,

Just want to share some pics and info on this fine drum.

For my entire drumming life, I've been dreaming of one of these. The past weeks, I sold some gear to finally get me a Ludwig Black Beauty.

Being a vintage drum enthusiast and a child of the seventies, I always wanted a blue olive badge from the late 70's "re-introduction" period. The second criteria was that it had to be 6.5". Third, I like the have the possibility of using a tone control muffler when I need it and I don't see them on the newer BB's.

So here she is,... a 1979 brass 6.5" Super Sensitive.

It didn't come cheap but still a bit under the high European prices for a new BB 6.5" SS.

Overall, the drum is in great shape with only here and there some minor discoloring in the black finish. (see pic 3) The strainer mechanisms have a few non original screws on them but I'm not to bothered by that.

To soften the "ring" a bit, I swapped the coated Ambassador for a Coated CS and it did the job.

I must admit that I was a bit reluctant on the fact that it wasn't a regular P-85 drum and it took me some time to understand how to get the snares right but once I realized that they only require just enough tension, the drum opened up and sounded phenomenal. Already a tiny bit of over tensioning will start to choke the drum,... I guess that's the nature of the SS beast.

Please join in with good advice and info,...

Glad you got one. I am still without one.

Do you prefer SS over standard snare mechanisms in general?

Or just for this drum?

Awesome dude.

Always wanted one.

She's a real beauty stedi, congrats on a great buy. It's a shame the previous owner reamed that hole to add a conventional screw on the strainer. I have several of those little Allen screws that hold the guard in place. I would have been happy to send you how ever many you needed to complete the drum.

Enjoy...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

The Super Sensitive mechanism is new to me.

I have a 6.5" Supra that I bought new in 1989 and it's what you would call, my workhorse snare. I replaced the P-85 strainer on that thing after 10 years of use and now also that one is ready to go. It's a good strainer but 10 years of hard use is about all it can have.

Many thanks for the offer John.

Those "guard screws" are not only replaced, I believe the previous owner even had the holes re-drilled and re-threaded so the originals wouldn't do any good. I'm on the look out for a couple of those Allen screws that will fit.

Very nice!

I have a 1929 5x14 Super Deluxe. I too would have rather of had the standard strainer but I wasn't going to keep searching as the prices were still going up at the time.

I wanted a 100th Anniversary BB as it would put the two 80 years apart. Since I was not able to secure an engraved one I finally got this one 2 weeks ago. Adding die-cast hoops really makes this snare sound amazing.

Horrible pic but you get the idea

Very, very nice snare. I recall having a '78 or '79 Ludwig catalog, that had engraved BB's in it. I'd love one of those! Love the B/O era.

Nice photos.

Hi FT,... thanks!

In a couple of weeks our band is planning to do some studio recordings.

I hope we'll find the time to do some sound-files. One of the things I'd like to do for quite some time now is to do some comparison recordings.

For example to line up my COB snares and video/record them side by side and find out how the BB stands up next to a 6.5 Krupa, Gretsch 4160, Dyna, etc...

Thanks John, I found a local hardware supplier that can help me with such screws. In Dutch they're called: "INBUSSTELSCHROEVEN" ... Excited

Complete SS mechanisms pop up once in a while on Ebay so I might even wait for one to show up at a fair price.

I thought about havig it engraved. I've done some business with Adrian Kirchler in the past so I might drop him an email to ask for a quote. Then again,... I'll probably fall from my chair to find what it will actually cost me and what the lead time will be,...
