Need help, does this look right to you? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

hey gang!

i was hoping to get some help on this. Recently i started teaching and my student said that he was thinking of selling his recent Mapex Kit for a new DW kit - when i asked him his budget he said around $3,000

I fell off my chair and told him i thought i could get him a vintage ludwig player's kit for under 1,000. $750 bucks later he's got a Ludwig Preserial (1962 i think?) Downbeat. I'm working on making the bass drum a little more presentable for him and so far it looks pretty great (though its been unwrapped, but i actually don't mind the really organic look.

ANYWAY! while i was fixing it up and making it all smooth again, i noticed that the WFL style bass drum spurs seem to be angled quite sharply forward, certainly more than the later knurled/block mounting style bass drum spur mounting systems. And i just wasn't sure whether it was right, but i figured you guys might be able to help

What do you think? is that the angle that the WFL style spurs on the earlier preserial kits had?

thanks so much!

wait, how do you mean backwards?

these aren't the clip on style ones - there's two holes drilled for each mounting bracket which means it can only go on one angle...

no it has an allen key head bolt to it, the spurs are able to be moved and have some adjustment to them. loosen the bolt remove the spurs and turn them towards the hoops like mine that I've shown you in the first pic?, I don't remember the size allen wrench. look at this pic you can see the allen key bolt. it is in the center of the spur mount.

My set is a '48-'52 WFL, the spur mounts are not tilted at all, just at the wrong end of the bass drum...lol. (Don't ask, we've discussed this before on this forum....it's still a mystery). Seems WFL/Ludwig did alot of strange things.

Oh, and it seems they are not alone. This is a photo of Andy White, who lives in NJ. He laid down the drum tracks for the Beatles "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", and P.S. I Love You". Note the spurs. (Hmmm, my Dad told me when he got me the set in 1965 that he bought the drums from a NJ drummer.....Nah, can't be.....?)

Could've been custom order for left-handed drummer?

Anyway, a BD anchor ought to fix it.

Sadly, I don't think your drums belonged to Andy White, as the legs on his BD seem to be more in the middle of the shell.

But I gotta say them are beautiful and VERY WELL preserved drums. You're lucky to have them!

Actually, you have the left spur on the right side and the right on the left side. The spur should come out of the mount from the front. Leave the mounts in place and just loosen the allen screw and swap spurs from one side to the other. So, I guess that could be construed as "backwards".

mmmm i think i understand what you mean - but the problem is is that the mount has two holes drilled for it to mount it, so i cant rotate it!

here are some pics

No you don't need to do anything to the mounts, it is the very small black allen key bolt on the outside, get the right size allen wrench loosen it remove the spur leg and turn it facing the hoops? are you following me?
