My grandpa bought this kit from a garage sale and sold it to me for $50.. anybody know much about these? and is it worth fixing up? (skins and maybe a polish- but brown willow is in excellent condition) I'm not a drummer as of yet, purchased this to be my starter kit but upon researching thought maybe not a good idea. Does serial number 0034 relate to age?
Yamaha D-20? Serial number 0034 Last viewed: 11 hours ago
that is an awesome set. They are well made and probably the best you could get from Japan in the late 60s/early 70s and way better than most starter kits today. Even the old used heads are better than most cheap new kits come with today.
However, if you strip down the shells and polish the wrap with Novus 2 plastic polish, polish the lugs and rims with a good metal polish and throw on some nice new heads and it will look and sound sensational. Grab yourself a nice 70s Ludwig Acrolite snare to go with it and you are set for life.
The serial number doesn't relate to age but it's late 60s/early 70s. And as you've probably gathered by now, $50 was a bargain. Well done.
Here's mine. I use this as my main gigging kit. Questlove from the Roots plays one on the Jimmy Fallon show as well.

Plus 1 to Fayray. Grandpa gave you a real deal. Fix 'em, clean 'em, play 'em.
Zak, that will be a great kit with a little TLC. That is a monster deal for $50.
Fayray, great looking kit and the Lokfast stand is a nice touch. What is the shell layup of these kits?
Very proud owner of a new Blaemire Snare 6.5 x 14 made by Jerry Jenkins "Drumjinx"

Thanks. I really like the Lokfast hardware. The shells are Birch/Lauan. Here's a pic of a 60s Yamaha tom shell (right) next to a Star shell (left) for reference.
Thanks for the tips Fayray! I'll definitely do that. Yours looks immaculate! Planning on keeping it for as long as I can. I'll put pics up when I'm done
Also- found "F-745" stamped on the inside of the floor tom.. Any meaning to this? Google proved itself unhelpful
no worries Zak. Mine was in worse shape than yours but it was a remarkably easy restoration. They are very well made drums.
That number means nothing to me , i have something similar in my shells and have found nothing to give them any significance.
Here's mine as found, and yes, that's silver spray paint on the rims and snare shell.
Oh wow, that gives me a bit of hope! What would you recommend for repairing cracks in the bass drum rim? There's just some smallish cracks where the previous owner has attached the bass pedal. I was thinking just some wood putty and a fresh coat of paint. Or leave as is?
depends on what sort of crack but if only small and not a break then some filler would work, I'm sure. Look up painting hoops on this site using the search tool and you'll find heaps of info on how to do it and what to use. Just make sure you properly mask the inlays as you'll never be able to replace those and it's great they are still there as both my Yamaha kits are missing the original inlays.
