No matter what might be under the Black Panther wrap, you'll still find a B/O badge wood shell Ludwig set there.

I dont know that Id tour that kit, but Id definitely keep it for recording. Those clear interior 3 ply Ludwigs are the highest quality, best sounding drums Ludwig ever produced (in my opinion). Clapping Happy2Cool1Keep on Pl

It's definately not a myth. I have seen more than few examples. I will say this though, those mod finishes would most likely be found under B/O badge black panther drums. By the 70's it was pretty clear that citrus was not selling which is why it was covered over.
BTW mod orange and psych red appeared around June 1967. Black panther may have come out in mid-late 1968 and citrus was prob about the same time. Obviously a color that was brand new wouldn't be covered over. After a few years though it definately makes sense because the citrus drums were not moving. I would find it very very odd to see a keystone badge citrus set covered over. It would not make sense.
I doubt it would be hard to carefully check and see if another wrap was underneath...
Yo! Anytime a Clint Eastwood classic line can be thrown into a drum arguement, it should be recognized!!!! Well done sir!! Guitar Dude Man
Couldn't a guy measure a non-camouflaging set of black panthers with some mic's and use that to determine if it was covering something else? The wrap would add to the thickness. Non-destructive testing, in the trade known as NDE/NDT. It works!
If it's there, you should be able to spot it at a bearing edge,or maybe by removing a lug or two,and checking the mounting hole.If you must peel the wrap from anywhere, just do it in an inconspicous location, like under a lug.I agree with keeping the drums in an unaltered original condition. But sometimes.....like in the movie "Dirty Harry",the bad guy on the ground says to Harry after being shot, and Harrys famous speach,"I gots to know";)Steve B

A+ to Wflkurt he made some great points. This is the story i was told by Bill Ludwig at the NAMM show in L.A.,CA in about 1990.About these Black Panther covered set's.That you could maybe fine a mod finish under one of these set's with the B/O badge on it.The mod finish drums were NOT selling very good at the time Ludwig had many of these shells wrapped in mod finish that Ludwig had to do something with them Ludwig re-covered them in Black Panther to sell off the shells...I know for fact that this is true in 1989 i pick up a set of Ludwig drums at a pawn shop it had the black panther finish i was thinging at the time that it was a home done covering job i re-moved the finish and under that i found a Citrus finish under it..I have a few frinds that have also found the same thing Citrus or Orange under this wrap but only on B/O badge drums NEVER under a K/S set.....Mikey
This has been interesting. I have not ever seen the Black Panther finish. Is it like leather or cloth?

I haven't seen it in years. But, if I remember correctly, it was kind of a vinyl, leather-look covering. Gave it that upholstry (sp?) look! Also, the inlays on the BD hoops were silver sparkle which did seem to go well with it.
Like I said in an earlier post, my experience with it was with a friend's "Carioca" Ludwig set years ago. That set, with the chrome timbales instead of regular toms, is also something you don't run into much anymore either (actually it wasn't real popular in the first place, IMO!!)
