From Purdie Shuffle

> Oh god! For the gazillionth time! That is a myth!Sorry, but you're wrong! It happens often enough for CIB to take a peek. Just last year a good buddy of mine (at DFO) found a Orange Mod kit hiding under a Black Panther finish.Well worth a look. And Mike is absolutely correct. It is not 'myth' but fairly well-known that, Ludwig used a bunch of shells that had finishes that weren't selling at the time to make the early Panther kits. Check your Ludwig history...John

Lame

I got news for you....Black Panther was out before the other "rare" and "not selling" finishes you claim that all "early" black panther shells started life as......check YOUR Ludwig history

if black panther was out prior to those, thats fine. it must have sold better for ludwig to have covered the "mod" finishes in it to help it sell. makes perfect sense to me. but i promise you that those kits are out there, without a doubt. i'm like john. i know several drum brothers that own or have owned those kits.

To get his back to the main topic...

Beau, GREAT FIND!! Feels good, doesn't it!

IMO, clean it up, keep it, and use it! I KNOW you're going to take care of it. Then, when something you'd rather have comes along... well, then you could sell this one!

BTW -- didn't your orange mod kit come from a furniture store? Just what do you mean when you say you never find this kinda stuff??!!?? :)

Back when I just started drummin' on a set, a friend of mine had a Ludwig "Carioca" set w/timbales. The BD and FT were Black Panther. I always thought that set with its "color combination" just as pictured in the Ludwig catalog was so cool... in fact, that set had a LOT to do with me wanting to play a set! Up until then I had just been into marching and concert band music...

To all that "got off track" about the possibilities of an underlying wrap... No worries! That's why I belong to this site, to hear and view the input from all of you! Also, when I said I'll take a peak, I can just look at where the wrap and the shell seams are. I won't be peeling anything back.

And it appears to me that I'll get the parts I need and re head it. So that means I'll be needing a 16" hoop and 2 bass drum legs! Billnvick?

If it's there, you should be able to spot it at a bearing edge,or maybe by removing a lug or two,and checking the mounting hole.If you must peel the wrap from anywhere, just do it in an inconspicous location, like under a lug.I agree with keeping the drums in an unaltered original condition. But sometimes.....like in the movie "Dirty Harry",the bad guy on the ground says to Harry after being shot, and Harrys famous speach,"I gots to know";)

Interestingly, I knew a guy, who knew another guy, who had a Black Panther kit, that had Black Panther underneath the Black Panther. Weird. = D

What a sweet find, CIB!
