Anyone able to identify/confirm this Ludwig? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

The florar pattern was available on those drums from 1926-1928 with the scroll pattern running up to 1925 and the 10 point floral pattern starting in 1929. I see three different 12 leaf patterns in my books, one with a thick line in the leaves, one with a thin line and one with no line at all. May there is one pattern for each year of availability?

Anyone care to chime in on my theory there.

I always thought so. Bill Wasner identified my BB as being from 1929, although I've seen similar patterns in later drums.

Some of the floral designs had lines and some didn't, I believe they changed a little bit every year or so which is how the age of the drum is figured.

BB expert John Aldridge once told me that L&L used 3 different engravers during the 1920s (and maybe the 1930s).

I checked with John Aldridge, his reply: "I agree. It's an old shell with new hardware. Still, $800 is a steal."

That might explaint the three variations of the 10 point floral pattern as well then. I haven't looked at the scroll patterns enough to see if there were any differences there though.

I would deffinitely like to see the scroll variations.

As for the drum above, I wouldn't touch it for $800. It is someones attempt at reproducing a BB but with all the issues with it I think the buyer would be very.hard pressed to try and make his mo.ey back if he tried to sell it.

Here you go...the 4x14 on the left is a "deep cut" scroll that BB expert John Aldridge said that he has only seen two examples of...maybe a substitute engraver that day? The next two (4x14, 5x14) are similar and the 6.5x14 is a different style of scroll (notice that the "Ludwig Chicago" is in the lower panel)...The the last 5x14 looks like a fancy scroll...

I would buy that drum for 800.00, fix the holes, secure the correct hardware and 2 1/2 xs my money.
