Can anyone here identify this snare drum?

Loading...

Hi there to one and all, first time poster here.

Although not a drummer myself, being a recording engineer and studio owner, I am dealing with drums in some capacity on a daily basis and have developed a keen interest in vintage drums and have been finding this forum most interesting and informative.

In addition to the studios 'house kit', I find myself adopting various unwanted drums and cymbals and have found that even the most undesirable drum can sometime prove useful somewhere on a particular track.

The reason for this post however is that I have recently acquired an old snare drum and I was hoping that someone here could identify it for me as the badge seems to be missing and all that remains is the faint outline of where it once was.

Any info/insight would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Bump.

Any ideas?

I appreciate that it is no doubt nothing to get excited about but I am hoping that someone here can kindly satisfy my curiosity.

Looks english to me....very Premier-esque, but not Premier. Maybe a Carlton or Ajax, or a Beverley? Definitely NOT Premier or Olympic.....anyone?

I was thinking German or maybe Russian just due to the hardware.

Either way a neat drum!

Thank you for all your responses so far.

As you can see, I have now uploaded a photo showing the badge shadow/outline which may help identifying the drum.

I've been unable to properly assess the sound/tone of the drum yet at it is currently missing its snare and could also do with some new heads. However, even in its current state, it's sounding good and seems to have potential. One thing that I did notice is that for a drum that has been sitting around for years in a garage and with its heads in such a bad state, I was able to tune it fairly swiftly and with very little effort. I am hoping to give it a good clean up etc over the next few days and get a snare fitted.

This snare was found along with an old John Grey & Sons 'Broadway' 20" kick drum and another unbranded, very shallow, 2” deep snare drum. Both the John Grey Kick and this shallow snare were fitted with calf skin heads which unfortunately are badly damaged.

Well...if it was found with a John Grey set, I'd say its also most likely a John Grey snare drum....
