Let's talk hi hats for recording Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Of course this is a vintage forum, but let's talk hi hats for a bit...new or old. What do you guys have in your arsenal of hi hats? And which ones would you record with?

Just interested to see what everyone thinks...no right or wrong here.

I'm a Zildjian guy, and I do like New Beats...both modern as well as the 60s and 70s ones. I have all 3 eras of New Beats in the 14" size. I like the new K Lights and the K Cons too. Some of my favorites.

The cymbals that you're listing are very close to my favorite ones :)

Especially the 15" Lights are very interesting.

But speaking about recording: I tend to use thicker cymbals on recordings then for live situations. I can't exactly put my finger on a single reason, they just feel better in the mix. So for example i'm using New Beats live in one project, but Avedis Rock Hats for recording.

You can't go wrong with New Beats! I play a set of new ones at church and they sound great in the mix, but too bright and heavy when I don't have my earbuds in.

That being said, I play 14" K Cons live most of the time with my blues-rock and Christian rock/Praise & Worship bands. I also have two 15 1/8" K Zildjian Istanbul crashes (fairly heavy and clangy as crashes) that I use as a set of really sweet hats. They cut well enough without being aggressive at all with a slightly bright, yet low-pitched stick and have a fairly light but dark throaty sound when opened...I'm getting goosebumps talking about them. ;) They are a lot of fun to play.

I used to have a set of 14" New Beats that I traded for some Rock Hats that I sold and got a set of 13" K/Z Hats, then got an A Custom Mastersound bottom to mate with the K top. I sold all 3 of those cymbals and got the K Cons last year. I really wanted to check out the 15" K Lights, but Memphis Drum Shop had just sold the last pair. I tried the 14" K Lights, but liked the 14" K Cons better - they had about 9 sets of K Cons that I tried against the K Lights...too much fun - they cut very well, but with just the right blend of bright and dark stick (higher pitch than the 15s) and a louder, yet darker, open sound than my 15s.

All that being said, you guys have pointed out some very fine sets of hats. I still think a heavier set of hats are nice, but my tastes have moved toward lighter hats in the last few years.

I failed to address the actual question you presented in my previous post. I recorded 3 years ago with my blues-rock band using the previously mentioned K top/A Custom Mastersound combo. I listen back to that recording now and think, "Those hats were a little too bright and aggressive for some of the songs." I recently recorded with the blues-rock band again using the K Constantinoples. Listening to the recording now, I feel that they were a very good choice for almost every song. They are "out front" without being aggressive, but are a little too "out front" for one or two of the songs. I think the 15" K Istanbul "crash/hats" would have been a better choice for those songs.

good feedback. Yeah, I also have old K and A 15s if I want a more mellow sound, and sometimes mix and match them.

My favorite are 40 year old New Beats as well. After playing for 30+ years they are now my 'perfect' hats,live/recording. Never thought that a pair of Zildjian pie's picked up for $30 at a pawn shop could change your sound.

I bet those sets sound great, mixed or matched! I've come to appreciate a larger hihat. I'd love to get my hands on some 16" hats! ;)

I wish I could find pawn shop prices like that. I walked into a pawn shop the other day and they wanted $50 for a cracked 60s 18" clangy cymbal and $175 for a 90s 18" A Medium Thin.

I have some New Beats that I acquired with my original set in 1977. They have improved with age and are a joy to play. I've had everyone from jazzers to metalheads compliment me on their sound and feel.

I have a second set of New Beats on my practice kit. They have heavier cymbals, but just aren't as versatile, which isn't to say that they don't sound good.

If I found a good set of K's, I'd think about buying them. I also tried a tasty set of Bosphorus at a Guitar Center a few months back when I was killing time. I don't remember the series, but they compared very favorably with my older NBs. I sometimes regret not buying those, but until my old NBs meet their maker, I don't really need another pair of hats.

Buying drum stuff from a pawn shop is 1 of 2 things.OVERPRICED or UNDERPRICED.I find most of my vintage Zildjians at pawn shops because most P.S.'s look for the black 'Zildjian' ink logo, not the actual stamp.BTW....DIDNT MEAN TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT OF THE POST HERE.
