Concert tom pics wanted!

Loading...

I think you know I'm a fan of concert toms, and I'm putting together a site dedicated to them!

It's in its infancy right now, just an intro and a handful of photos of vintage setups, but I'll be adding pics from my Ludwig, Slingerland and Rogers catalogs, and could also use your submissions and comments as well. Pics from your Pearl, Tama etc catalogs, or of your concert tom kits, or of your favorite drummer with concert toms are all welcome. PM or email me

NAMM photos are certainly welcome, but only if you shot them. If someone got a shot of the Yamaha kit, or that giant Tama kit, or last year's Crush or Craviotto toms, those would be nice to have. No compensation, but I think I can manage a photo credit or a thank-you.

So let me know what ya got! I'll be officially launching the site soon, but if you sniff around www.bermudaschwartz.com you may stumble upon the work in progress. :)

Here's a picture of my old Tama Imperialstar octoplus kit. I finally sold it about 5 years ago. It made me feel like a rock star in high school. No cymbals in the pic since I wasn't selling those. Gil Moore of Triumph was my hero at the time. I used to look at the pictures of his drums on the album covers for Rock 'n' Roll Machine, Just a Game, and the inner sleeve of Allied Forces. The I worked all summer of 1988 without spending a single dime and bought the drums second hand. About 2 years later, I discovered jazz, got a small set of Slingerlands, and never touched the Imperialstars again. Good memories tho.

DeSwans, about what year is that kit from? I just picked up 14" and 15" Tama concert toms identical to those except they are black. I'm probably going to put them up for grabs soon if anyone is interested..

I believe 11 of the drums were from about 1978. The left foot bass drum was more in the 1983-ish range.

Funny story: When I found the dream set in the local Tradin' Times, it was an 11 pc. with a single bass drum. I had my heart set on double kick, but bought the kit anyway for I believe $860 with Zildjians and stands from a guy in the south suburbs of Chicago. In the late 80's before the internet, there was really no practical way to find an orphan, 24x14 Tama Imperialstar bass drum in metallic white. They were discontinued and it just wasn't likely. So anyway, the next day, after school, I walked into the local tiny music shop, Pro-Am in Westmont, and told the guy behind the counter what I bought. This shop was small, like the size of a small living room. I asked him if he knew by any chance where I could find a 24" metallic white Imperialstar bass drum? He looked up at the ceiling and just said excuse me while he walked in back to the store room. He emergered about 30 seconds later with a 24x14 metallic white Imperialstar bass drum. It didn't have any heads or tom mount. But he had it and it cost me $100. Blew my mind!

Here's a pic of my daughter banging on my black Slingerland Country Road kit in the garage. A nice garage sale score a couple summers ago:

DeSwans, I have a similar story on a set of Imperialstars as well. I bought a set in Midnight Blue from my first drum teacher. Single bass also. I went to the local store and same thing, the owner says I'll be right back. He came out with a 24 in pewter like yours. I sent it to Tama/Hoshino in PA and they recovered or had someone recover it for me in Midnight Blue to match the rest.

I'll have to wait until spring to dig them out for a full family pic...

When I was a Senior in high school I added 6" 8" 10" 14" 15" 16" concert toms to my Ludwig Hollywood set. I was a big ELP fan at the time and really liked Carl Palmers concert toms on the "Brain Salad Surgery" album.

This was 1974/75 and my concert toms were maple 3 ply with rerings and granitone interiors. The original 10" and 14" were burned in a club fire but I replaced them in 1980 and the replacements are 6 ply maple with no rerings and a silver metal strip around the outside resonate side. Still have all of them. Last year I bought Suspenderz for the 14" 15" & 16" toms and a low Tama stand to use them as 14" 16" floor toms or 15" 16" How ever. Here is a pic from a couple years ago when I set them up,"except that 12"Camco", and how I configured the lower ones for floor toms. I will make a good pic of them all when I get a chance.

That kit, in silver metallic, was my bread and butter and my first real kit for years, purchased back in 81. I picked out the silky-white-looking drums over the black(I was worried about scratches). That kick drum is immense-sounding. Great kit.
