Astair doing a three minute Master Class on rhythm. Thanks for posting that. It's exactly what I was talking about. From beginner to advanced, there are at least fifty absolutely killer drum licks that would make any drummer sound good in that one short segment of film. Amazing how talented some of those guys were. Great thread.

Strange collection of miscellaneous pit contraptions in opening pic. What looks like an 18" tube-lug bass drum on the left (with a full rail consolette) appears to have a butt plate with gut snares attached. Weird stuff. And look at the shine on those cymbals! Great picture!

I am not sure which drummer said this. I think it was either Rich or Bellson.

Someone here may know for sure. But after a set one of the forenamed drummers drum endorser was complimenting the drummer on his playing and soloing and he said,"Watch my feet, I am tap danceing on the drums". I am thinking it was Rich talking to Bill Ludwig. ?

Hey, wasn't Buddy Rich a 'hobby' tap-dancer? Tommy P? Am I remembering this right about Buddy?

What a great thread....and Purdie Shuffle, I agree wholeheartedly.

At 39 I don't exactly feel like a "Younger" drummer, though I certainly haven't earned the status of "Old guy" yet either.

I guess all we can do is try to turn other drummers on to the great hoofers & hope that it sticks.

It's sort of funny that this comes up, as a friend sent me this just about a month ago. (The relevance of the clip will become evident around 1:45...but who could skip over a Jo Jones solo?)

While we're on the subject, I feel it would be remiss not to mention "Other" dancers like Whitey's Lindy Hoppers & point out that people like Frankie Manning are just as important to jazz (Swing in particular) as Basie, Ellington and all the rest.

If people aren't dancing it isn't worth playing, and they won't dance if you don't play.

John!...

Yes indeed!, and actually more than a "hobby" tap dancer. Buddy had a night club act that he did in the late 50's that included tap dancing... and he was very good too! This was during the period where Buddy decided that he was THROUGH playing drums in a big band. He got into singing.. ( so-so ) .. tap dancing.. ( GOOD! ) .. and solo drums set..( GREAT!! )

Richie!...

... and you know that is Bert Lahr in the white suit/beret, right? The Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is THE clip of Buddy doing his nightclub act on the Steve Allen Show back in the late 50's... great stuff. That is the clip I was quoting in my previous post. By the way, Buddy stated.. ( in a moment of melancholy ) .. that he TAP DANCED on his pedals, and THAT is where he got all his speed/power from!
