i think one reason that they have never gained popularity is due to cosmetics. they arent bad looking snare drums by any means. but they just don't reach out and grab with you great looks.

i think this also keeps some b/o badge acros low in sale prices. i had my b/o acro setup with my vistalites one day. my son told me that snare had to go. said it looked crazy with the kit. he changed his mine when i layed into the snare drum a bit.

John -- although I've never owned one, I've always thought they'd sound about the same.

Mike -- I think what we're seeing here is that for years the Ludwig Standard line was looked upon as "entry level" and these snare drums, just like their same-shell-as-the-vintage counterparts are just now beginning to be noticed... Kinda like the whole Club Date thing. When I was a kid, I avoided them like the plague. But now can't seem to find enough of them! As we're seeing, the Ludwig Standards are doing the same.

I recently picked up (off CL) and entry-level Taye set that came with a Ludwig Rockers snare drum. Much to my surprize when I put the SD on eBay it got quite a bit of attention/bids, and I got more out of it than I paid for the whole set (which I've since sold as well!) So, I don't really think it's a "shortage" of the more popular vintage stuff that beginning to drive this market a little, I think it's that people are just beginning to see that this kind of stuff is pretty good, too!

Can somebody post of picture of one of these jobbies so I can be on the lookout? Being a Slingerland guy, I'm a bit rusty at spotting the different Luddy models.

Another great snare that gets no respect is the Slingerland steel shell Festival models that came in the big molded case and were sold to students. I've used zillions of snare drums over the years. They only time I ever get compliments on my snare sound is when I play either my 8-lug or 10-lug Festival models. Always easily found for well under $100 and very much worth it. Not much to look at, but a great sounding drum.

BBK - bro, for $57.00 you were much better off keeping that one.

I keep telling myself that every time I look up at my snare drum shelf.....:(

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Yep, the secret is getting out... Those metal Standard snares are great! And, ever think about the wood ones? Can you say 'Jazz Festival' with different lugs and badge?

I've never managed to keep one of the metal Standard snares... The last one I had I let go of for $75.00, but the guy fell in love with it. I've got a bunch of Acro's, but no metal Standard at the moment. Oh well, one will pop up... they always do when you least expect it.

I have one of these that I got as part of a kit that I picked up for the cymbals. The 60's Standard snare was just hiding in the pile. I cleaned it up as best I could and put on some fresh heads. She still ain't too pretty, but she sure sounds great! Kind of like the ugly sister with the great personality that no one ever asks to dance... I say give her a chance dang it! :2Cents: Yes Sir

I got one with my Standards in 71,from Sam Ash.I wanted the chrome snare, and had to wait 2 weeks for it.Blue mist sparkle 2 up,1 down.I should never have sold them. The drums sounded great with stock weathermasters, but I changed the snare head to a coated emperor, and got kind of a Bonham type open ful sound out of it.Very sensitive too.Great drum.Cool Dude

Agreed 100%, I picked up a Festival in a1 condition this year, for about 85USD, everyone that hears it is blown away at the sound, in particular those 8 lug rims are a killer. I'm headed to the US in June with hopes (among other things), of scoring an Acro at the right price, I think I'll include one of these Standards to the list.

Cheers
