Ludwig Supraphonic COB Last viewed: 10 minutes ago

If a magnet is sticking to the shell it is obviously steel. Ludwig makes a chromed steel snare with Imperial lugs. They look just like Supra's but far less expensive. I wonder if someone switched the badge and passed it off as a Supra. The steel drums are heavy too. Actually the ones I am thinking about have the bowtie lugs.

Here's a pic of the full snare. I have a hard time believing this is a lower end ludwig where the badge has been switched. It looks like every other supra I've had. I don't know if you can tell much from the photo, but if you can let me know -

It sure looks like a Supraphonic, a nice one too. Why in the world is a magnet sticking to it?

Hobbs - would you please take as good/close-up shot as you can of the back of the badge grommet? (inside the drum)

The small knob on the muffler bothers me, I 'think' it should be larger. (Small knob mufflers are early 60's/50's) If the badge looks at all like it has been messed with from the inside, then somebody tried to pull a fast one. It looks legit from the outside though. The shell is pristine, not a pimple in sight, if it's not brass, then it's steel for sure.

Too many great drums to list here!

Feeling sort of like a gynecologist removing the head and showing the grommet. Or a ****ographer. Please note the magnet - which is a very strong magnet for its size - adhered in last photo. Even a very strong magnet wouldn't stick to water unless it was made out of Jesus ... so that makes this steel COS, right?

The magnet, or the message ;}

If it's COS then the magnet should stick. So, the ? is why not Ludalloy, correct?

That's a COB badge to me and if that's a switch - it's a perfect job. However, page 241 of the Ludwig book says "A very few Super Ludwigs were made of steel" The author has at least some provenance on this. The Ludwig experts here can say more. But if the magnet is really sticking (I can't get any type of magnet to stick to my Super) then you could have a rare drum. It's certainly a nice one, whatever it is.

Wow!

I sure hope that it is a rare Supra. All the time I've spent wondering why the hell the magnet's sticking to the shell should have some sort of compensation. The deeper down I get into this vintage drum fixation the crazier it seems to be getting.

Now I won't be able to fall asleep believing I have some sort of holy snare in my collection.

I want to add this about the weight: I weighed this snare @ 7 lbs 6.7 oz; & I could swear that the Ludalloy Supras I've had & sold in the past weighed in the 6+ pound range. I know COB are quite heaver. If this is a rare steel shell then wouldn't that make it heavier than Ludalloy?
