What should I build?

From Purdie Shuffle

The only deep-dish one I saw that he had left in his ebay inventory is a 6.5" x 13" that he is offering. I think the depth of the drum will make up for the missing inch in dimension. (smaller drum) It's too big to be considered in the popcorn category. 6.5" x 13" is not a bad size. An 8 lugger in that size will have tons of BARK.John

Hmmmm

Just want something a bit deeper than what I have- I have a 5.5x14" Slingy solid wood and a 5x14" '80s Gretsch maple. I want that deeper sound...

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

All he has left are 5x14" undrilled copper shells. I don't know if beds are crimped in or not. Price is right @ $52 + $19 shipping

I purchased one of his undrilled 5x14 Slingy's. No snare beds. Mine was bent pretty bad. Could slide a pencil under the gap between the shell & the table, (also over 3/8" out of round). He seemed pretty receptive about exchanging it. I sent it back 5 weeks ago and now he will not repond to my emails about my replacement. :(

He was a bit of a dique with me too! That's why I only purchased one shell from him. Took him 6 weeks to deliver my shell. And that was after a half dozen emails asking about my drum. Everybody else seemed to have a good transaction with him so I chalked it up to a fluke. Keep us posted if this guy gives you a hard time. Fortunately, you have Paypal and ebay you can turn to if push comes to shove.

Sorry to hear your experience. Hope you get a good one in return.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

My favorite snare for the past 3 years has been a 13x7 Pork Pie Brass Patina. Being a little vertically challenged & also having to deal with limited mobility, the 13" is the ticket for me. I also built a 13x7 Birch with Walnut veneer, kicking little drum!

Yeah, I am in a quandary. I am thinking that maybe I could be in for a bitter disappointment dealing with that dude (the shell guy on flea bay) again. And I really don't know if I really have time to build one. So maybe I don't roll my own snare at this point. MF has a Pork Pie Big Black Brass snare on sale right now. I may just do that. I just want a big, non-steel metallic snare drum to go in my arsenal.

Talking this out has helped cure me of wanting to build one, for sure!!!

I made a decision. I had some Alpha Metal Hats I didn't know what I was going to do with, so I am returning them and getting a Pork Pie Big Black Brass snare drum. I guess it's kinda their answer to a Ludwig Black Beauty. It even has tube lugs. I want that deep snare sound. I would have easily done with a Slingerland 6.5"x14" shell, but there aren't any left. I have way too many 5" drums at the moment. I need a good, barky metal snare that isn't a thimble in diameter or depth. I love low-tuned drums.

I thought about the Trick snares from their web site, but I already am a teeny bit over-extended (damn you Bill Me Later!!!). I have bought so much gear anticipating playing out. I need the liquid capital to pay bills. No- I am NOT pleading poverty BY ANY MEANS!!!! Now that I will be in not one, but two bands (well, the king of the blues band is also king of a pop/rock band), I will have plenty of opportunity to pay off my purchases.

Thanks for all of the advice. And while I am not building anything, I am getting what I need. In the end, I can't build it cheaper than I can buy it...
