Hi all
I'm searching for a while already for a nice rock kit. And now I found a Ludwig 'mach4' from 1970. 22,13,16. This one has long lugs!! a bit like on the recording custom of yamaha
Do you guys know if that is worth as much as the other vintage kits.
I have never seen long lugged Ludwig drums before.

I have always liked the look of the Mach lugs. I think they are unique depending on what year they were made they could be 3ply shells which sound amazing. There was a thread here a couple of weeks ago where a guy found a Mach kit in Huge sizes in white cortex a very cool kit. Good luck

I think the value has to do more with whether they are 3ply shells or not. I would have to see a picture of the kit. Condition plays a major role in the value of any kit. Also they made Mach kits in some relatively rare finishes Blue Silk, Red Silk, Gold Silk. This would add to the value also as opposed to the same kit in butcher block cortex. No offense Butcher Block Fans Hope this helps

Your set sounds like a good set and somewhat hard to come by.If its a Mach 4 set in blue the finish could be one of two "Blue Silk" or "blue Sparkle"..What does the shells look like inside are they clear with rings at each end of the drum? If so your set would be from 1974 this was the first year that Ludwig offered this as a set...Do you have the snare drum that came with the set if so that would be a Super Sensitive snare drum..Also if the set is a 3 ply shell set these sets sound great...Mikey
Greg D'Angelo, the drummer for White Lion, had a monster set of white Ludwig's with those long lugs on it. You can google "Little Fighter White Lion" to hear them roar!

Ilya, the vintage "mach" kits are relatively rare. I don't think you will be disappointed with it. There were two Ludwig mach kits, the first "Mach 4" a four piece in 1974 and "Mach 5" a five piece, I believe in '75.
Check these out. The guy in the photo was selling his kit last week. These are Monroe badge (2001) date stamped, black sparkle kit. This is one of Ludwig's offerings using the Mach lugs and was a special order back in 2001. On Ludwigs web site you can custom order kits with mach lugs.
Note the top two 6" and 8" are 70's B&O toms. He wanted $1200 for the whole set-up seen here including a gorgeous set of Sabian AA's with an Ed Shaughnessy 21" ride and all cases. A very decent deal, but I have too many kits now Eye Ball
Mach lugs were also used originally for years on Ludwig marching snares because they allowed for higher tensioning of the heads required by Drum Corps. The first drum I ever played was a 1971 Ludwig 15" stainless marching snare with Mach lugs. There is something very delightful about the long mach lug. I converted a silver wrap marching snare into a floor tom for one of my kits because of them. Awesome!

It's the Blue Silk Set.....The drums are from 1971 exactly! Does that mean it's not 3-ply or opposite?
I couldn't look at the set closely yet...so don't know about interior yet....
No snare drum. But I don't mind (I dont like supraphonic so much.. : -0 sorry), I have a nice DW 14*6.5 brass snare drums from end 70's to fit the set!
