I have the Mach 4 displayed on the cover of 1970 Ludwig catalog I don't think ludwig published catalogs every year. It could have been also in the 74' catalog
Ludwig '70s long lugs (mach4). Any good? Value??
I have the 8x12,9x13,16x16,14x24 Blue silk set...but I dont have the snare! So Mikey, I need the 6,5 Supersensitive for this one?

I think the Mach 5 had a 5x14 supersensitive.
Thanks everybody for all the great comments!
Now I'm really good informed!!!!!
Thanks a lot.....I will see what I do with the kit ;)
Great forum here :)
Ok, I went checking it out. I can get a good deal on this one.
But there are quite a lot of scratches in the coating.....so the conditions are not perfect. But everything is original.
The sound: the bassdrums is AMAZING!
The toms are for me a bit too dry.....and comparing to the bassdrums maybe not powerfull enough. Seems more like jazzy in stead of 'rocky'. Normal?
Or maybe it's the tuning.......So I'm still doubting. I can get it with an Acrolite snare...
Ilya,
If you are looking for a players kit, I wouldn't worry too much about some scratches. A kit like that will never devaluate so if you can get a good deal, go for it I would say.
I can Imagine that the Bass drum sounds amazing but there shouldn't be a reason why the 16" and 13" would sound less. Proper tuning and head choice are ultimately important. On my '66 Super Classic, (same sizes as the Mach4), it does for sure. I recently switched a few times between Ambassadors, Powerstroke 4 and Clear Pinstripes,... what a difference that makes !!!
On the other hand, I've never heard a Mach4 so I can imagine that the huge lugs dry out the sound and make the shells resonate less.
An Acrolite on top is a plus !
It's a fine snare, as you can read on today's lively discussion,... Mind Blowi
Ilya,
Sounds good. Some of those cosmetic issues can likely be dealt with by some of the good contributors here.
Stedi has the right advice re: heads. Those toms are some of the best sounding and most recorded ever produced. With a head change, they will sing and adapt to your playing style.
The Acrolite, a gem!
In the end you have to like the kit, doesn't sound like you're totally convinced?

Well, I'm certainly convinced of the bassdrum and (to my surprise) the snare.
But I expected more punch in the toms. That's why I like the bassdrum so much: it has that punch.....I have the feeling the toms sound at their best tuned pretty high, and are not open enough to sound (with G1's) fat enough with low tuning...
That's my logic at least, if you have enough body and open sound you can tune them low and make them sound fat. But if you have dry sound, they only sound on one point and make pretty dead sound when tuned low...
Yep, sound is so subjective. You have to like the sound.
