Dear Mikey Claus....I am so broke, and I just had a minor heart attack to boot. If thar happen ta be a King Beat in repairable condition.....Could we work something out? Also, I desperately need 2 Acro bowties, a P-85 and butt and hoops. I can use a Pearl P-85 style, but would rather not. The guy is awaiting my word so we can get the trade made. I am trading back for my first "CoffeeHouse Re-Creations" snare. Also, If there are any Wuhan Traditional Western sets down there, I'd like a shot at a set. I know one shop is selling them cheap for a full set, but any deals in the making would make a student of mine a very happy camper! As a matter of fact, any hand hammered Wuhans' that sound good would be cool with me. I am trying to outfit another donor and need all the cheap I can get, as long as they are not Planet Z or the like (stamped crapola).

One of my friends back in the 80's had a set of Superstars with this snare and it was an awesome drum. The snare assembly is not unlike the Ludwig Supersensitive or the Slingerland Sound King. They are unbelievable when you have it dialed in just right. But if it's off just a little it sounds very mediocre. I guess that is all snares but with these it's seems more pronounced. Stewart Copeland I think recorded with one of these. I know he played them in concert too along with the standard throw off model and he is a beast on equipment. I would love to have one of these.

Gretsch Nitron Glass New Classic 2010 8/10/12/14/16/22
Yamaha Cherry Wood Recording Custom 1987/2005 8/10/12/13/14/16/22
Ludwig Black Diamond Pearl 1966 5x14 S.S./13/16/22
Gretsch wood finish 1959 5x14/13/16/22
Slingerland Radio King Capri Pearl 5x14 Radio King

Hey Jonnistix,I tell you what i will do..I know the guy has 6 or 7 of these snares one was a 6.5x14 that one is not for sale iam keeping that one..the other 5 or 6 snares were 5.5x14 i maybe able to make 3 complete snares out of them.I will work out a trade on one of them with you..I have one acro lug but the tips were the screw screws in are missing you can have that FREE..I don't recall the trade that we were talking about for the P-85 and butt do you recall..You know iam after M.I.J. parts..Anyway i will know if the deal comes out by the middle of this coming week...I passed on the all the cymbals he was asking more than my cost on them...Mikey

so, what do you guys think about those crappy hoops?

I have aluminum die-cast ones on my yamaha snare and they are super rigid.

Should I replace tama's?

Hahaha--I wondered if we'd ever get back to your original question. I'm surprised to hear your complaint. I haven't found that to be the case with the two King Beats I have. All the parts on them are top-notch. An earlier comment was spot-on, though: these drums can sound very mediocre until you get them tuned up just right. Could that be part of the issue? What heads are you using?

Currently playing for loud rock and roll gigs:
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16

If you have the stock hoops on the drum,Tama die cast hoops are bullet proof.Replaceing them with aluminum DC hoops may change the sound in a bad way.

Remember,Die cast hoops are different than 1.6 and 2.3mm,not better. Its just a different sound.

I have just restored one of my two King Beats and I havn't found any problem with the hoops. It sounds great! However, both of mine are 10 lugs and maybe having 2 more tension rods makes the hoop more stable?

-Have you tried to fit your Yamaha hoops to the Tama (If possible)?

That may answer your worries.

the aluminum hoops on yamaha are going to stay there :), they 13" anyway.

but the hoops on this drum are definitely too springy, unless I unreasonably expect some "viagra" rigidity from them. So I've decided to take the hoop off and make a little video. The hoop is on the floor against an immovable object, as you can see I am applying very little force to deform it.

Also, I think the reason the drum is a @#$%^ to tune is that raising tension on the batter side considerably changes the tension of the resonant side, and vice versa.
