My New Acrolite

Loading...

Hello,

I am new to the forum and I hope that there are some Ludwig fanatics here on this forum that can answer some questions for me. Yesterday I purchased an early 70s B/O Ludwig acrolite. I know that this era acrolite is proably not the most sought after, but I was wondering if there is a noticable difference in sound in my early 70s as opposed to the more sought after 1964 to 1968. I also would like to know which drumhead combination would be the best to get the most open tone and warmth out of this drum. One other thing, I would like to know do I need to stick with an original 20 strand snare or if I go to a 32 strand would it help or hurt the drum? Thanks is advance for any help you could offer. I'll post some pics when she arrives.

welcome!

ive got 4 acros. to me, the 70's acros sound much like the 60's models do. they sound great in fact. i like mine with the snare side head cranked pretty good. i stick with the original ludwig wires on mine though. remo coated ambassadors up top sound great. i have recently been using ludwig medium weathermaster batter heads on these too. they really sound nice. i always try to use a thin snare side head on these such as the ludwig snare side heads. a remo diplomat also sounds good on the reso head to me.

hope this helps some. enjoy your new drum...

There is really no difference in sound between yours and a keystone Acrolite. The biggest difference is in the finish. It was more of a shiny surface in the 60's, and I'm guessing yours is the sandblasted looking finish. That's the one that I have, and it sounded the same as a keystone Acrolite that I recently sold. The keystones are just more valuable from a collector's viewpoint, not from a player's.

Head selection is (as always) up to personal preference. I have a Remo Ambassador X batter and Hazy Ambassador reso. The 1 ply heads will give you a little more resonant tone, but less durability. I'm a hard hitter, hence the Ambassador X. It's a 1 ply, 10 mil head and the regular Ambassador is 7 mil. This is kind of a happy medium between 1 and 2 ply. Keep in mind, this drum has a lot of ring to it.

I really think less is more on snare wires, and anything more than 20 strand is overkill. I watched one of Bob Gatzen's videos lately, and am going to follow his advice and try out some 12 strand wires. For me, snare wires are a necessary evil. You need that part of the sound to be there, but to me it sounds better with much less. If anybody here likes the band "The Honor System", the snare sound on "Rise and Run" is a very good example of a minimal snare wire sound. But once again this is a personal preference, so it's more important what you like than what I like.

In the Remo line:

The Ambassador is a 10 mil single ply

The Ambassador Vintage A is a two ply 10 mil (7 mil + 3 mil)

The Diplomat is a 7 mil single ply

Ludwig heads:

The Ludwig 'Medium' is a is a 7 mil single ply (like the Remo Diplomat)

The Ludwig 'Heavy' is a 10 mil single ply (like the Remo Ambassador)

My personal favorite on the Acro / Supra is the Remo vintage A.

Oops, you're right about the thickness. Well, the ambassador x is a little thicker anyway.

I agree with you on the Vintage Ambassador,s. They also sound good on a Supra as well as an Acro

I purchased this drum because I heard a video on You Tube by Trout Studio named Ten Classic Snares. It sounded good there. Hope you can view the video here:
