A gift from a famous drummer... Last viewed: 26 minutes ago

Hey Folks,

Back in '83 I was the brother in-law of a very famous rock drummer who gave me this snare as a gift... at the time I was a bar-band cover drummer so he thought that I would appreciate this snare as he claimed it was the first snare he used during the first dates booked with 'the band'. The only thing I have done to this snare is remove the heads, everything is in perfect condition... just really dull n' dusty. Can anyone tell me anything about this snare?

With a little research via the Vintage Drum forum, I have at least learned that this old 7x14 Ludwig snare has had a strainer replacement and the stamp on the inside of the shell reads 3701.

Cool drum, from the vintage drum guide on the net the non cut out imperial lugs on your drum first appear in the 1936 catalogue and your lugs look like the earliest ones, because I can't see any self aligning threaded inserts in the Lugs, the earliest had threads tapped into the lug itself. Those era drums did come in painted finishes, mostly duco, two color, with one color being in the middle of the drum the other color top and bottom, but I am pretty sure it could have been ordered just on color.Check this link.http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_snare_page.html# check the drum about 12 down. The hoops look like single flange and like they could be original,I don't know enough about the the throw offs of the period to tell you if that is even a ludwig, let alone what model if indeed it is.It looks a little like a super classic throw, without a lever, but the twist knob looks like plastic,or painted black. Some better pics of the inside of the drum, the bearing edge, the badge, lugs butt would probably and the throw would help the experts on this forum tell you what have much more accurately.

Thanks eamesuser, that is so close to this snare. The strainer knob is plastic and non-descriptive which leads me to believe that it was a retrofit as none of the example snares show strainer levers without a Ludwig ident stamp. ...The mystery continues. Great fun!

The 80's best music? I have never heard anyone ever say that. Hair bands and power ballads, makes my skin crawl.
