A gift from a famous drummer... Last viewed: 19 minutes ago

The 80's best music? I have never heard anyone ever say that. Hair bands and power ballads, makes my skin crawl.

I will say this- we will say how great the '60s music was, but that we only think of the iconic bands from that time. There was also some terrible music from that time, as well. We end up with a bit of memory loss when it comes to the crap that came out in the '60s...

Same with the '70s, same with the '80s and the '90s. The stuff that doesn't stand up tends to be forgotten. Right now, there's great debate about what music is standing the test of time with the '80s. I tend to think that in twenty years, this will have been settled.

I like some of the hair metal. There was also some very forgettable hair metal. But the stuff I DETESTED that got it's start in the early to mid '70s and went to it's peak in the late '80s was soft rock!!!! Ick!!!! I'm not talking ballads, just crappy, syruppy dreck!!!!

Hey Folks, Back in '83 I was the brother in-law of a very famous rock drummer who gave me this snare as a gift... at the time I was a bar-band cover drummer so he thought that I would appreciate this snare as he claimed it was the first snare he used during the first dates booked with 'the band'. The only thing I have done to this snare is remove the heads, everything is in perfect condition... just really dull n' dusty. Can anyone tell me anything about this snare?

I probably wouldn't restore it too much, as there's history with that drum.

The VDG Ludwig snare drum catalog page from 1937 shows a very good close-up of the original throw. That is just a very nice drum-

Looking at the badge grommet; could it be a nut on a 1/4 in phone jack like a guitar jack? These little fixes are what I always seem to enjoy from performing drummers. They are like one off signatures as time goes by. Drummers are cool!

Thanks to everyone who posts something about this old snare. It's been hangin' around with me for 30+ years and has been a better conversation piece than some of my classic cars! It was purchased during a time when he was hangin' out with the hippie musicians and playing in various cafes in Yorkville, Toronto Canada (circa 1970). He bought the snare at a store that is long gone called 'Drummer's Paradise' on Shuter Street during that time.

Here's a few more pics... Thanks vintagemore and all who post!

Great story, Catera... And the 80's was the start of the heavy metal era and I'm sorry to disagree with most people on this topic but the 80's are definately the best of times for most bands I love... Good luck with the snare cause it IS a great conversation piece!!

Now that I'm having a blast researching the history of this new-found mystery, I thought I'd ask one last question about this snare's construction. I now know that the throw-off and the vent grommet are replacement parts but one last piece that I didn't photograph is the snare wires. Would anyone know if these snare wires would be of this period (1937) as well? The stamping at both ends reads SNAPPI SNARES and JAMES PAT #1207825

Thanks again!
