Rewrapping marching drums... Last viewed: 49 minutes ago

Loading...

I've been seeing some cool former-marching drums on eBay that would make great "drum set" drums. They're not in desirable colors though, and the price often reflects it.

I'm just wondering how you all feel about rewrapping (and therefore de-valuing) one of these drums...?

I'm looking at a 10"x26" bass drum right now that could be the basis for a cool, ultra-portable "FAST"-sized vintage set.

Thoughts??

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

I just picked up an early 60s 26x7 Slingerland marching bass drum. It's amazing!!!

Marching drums aren't quite so desirable. Rewrap away!!! But, that's just my opinion...

1970 Ludwig Downbeat
1965 Ludwig Hollywood
1970 Ludwig Jazzette

I can see this 26" being really quick to respond, and lightweight to carry around. I'm really getting inspired by this idea.

I did and am glad I did! I have a cool looking and great sounding, players kit made from marching drums that no one wanted (with the exception of the 12" mounted tom). The best part is that I can play them and not worry about hurting them; not that I would though. It was a fun project. Check 'em out.

Wow, man! You pretty much nailed it! I'm planning the exact same setup, except I'm going with a 26" marching bass drum, although with less depth. I'm watching what's advertised as an 11"x26" bass on eBay right now. I really like the idea of having the diameter with a much shorter depth. It'd be really easy to throw in the backseat of even a small car.

Otherwise, I'm keeping those same dimensions... 12"x15" "floor tom" from a converted marching snare shell, and I'm seeking a 12" Club Date-style tom.

My Downbeat snare will round out the set.

Gonna wrap the toms and bass in Champagne Sparkle (Bermuda Sand from Precision Drum Co) and have a SWEET little gigging setup.

I'm betting you love those as much as I plan to love mine! :)

Edit: Oh yeah... I LOVE that little floor tom! :D

That floor tom is heavy (6 ply + 10 lugs) but projects and sounds pretty sweet. I'm sure you'll share pics of your finished product with us?
