Hi everyone

I am new to this forum. I been with vdrum forum for a while and i build custom vdrums.I been doing this for over 5 years now.

I just picked up some Ludwig drums from a guy and i was wondering what year these could be and if they are worth any money.

Thanks

The kick on the left and the mounted tom are pre 1976 3 ply with rerings, the kit is going to need a lot of elbow grease to be made presentable.the white interior on the tom would indicate pre 1969 the kick probably 1969 to 1971,but I have owned later drums with clear interiors. The gull wing spurs on the other kit put it in the 60's I think. I think that has lead an interesting life,I think they are a rewrap because I see no badges, and the tom was drilled for bottom lugs but there are no holes showing from the outside.because of the modifications and condition they are a players kit at best.I think you would be lucky to get 200.00 as a parts kit for them. You could look for used lugs and cheap rims and t rods and make a decent kit out of them as a project.

So if i would restore them would it be more value to rewrap them or take the wrap off and sand them and stain them with a nice clear coat.

Either way would look nice. While at it, you'd probably want to drill new holes for bottom lugs and rims. Concert toms don't sell for much these days.

First off I commend you for wanting to get those tubs playable again along with a face lift.As far as refurb options go,first is the condition of the shells under the wrap,Ludwig glued their wrap on,and sometimes when it is removed some wood will have come with it,so people will fill that in with wood putty, making a sand stain job useless, your option would be paint or re wrap, even if there is no damage to the wood after you get the wrap off,you may find that the shells will have different outer woods, you could find maple or mahogany, and how attractive it is or what grade will be a crapshoot,I have seen kits stripped with pretty decent looking wood on the outside, drums with a couple of different panels and seams and everything in between.Wrap for two kicks and the toms is going to cost at least a couple hundred dollars material wise. But for a kit like this you can use other cheaper materials to cover with, some of the guys on here have done it and the results were quite good, and hopefully they will chime in soon.

I disagree on the $200 value. I say more like $300-350. Hell, all of the hardware might be worth more than that.

I agree with Ear that these look to have been rewrapped already, which is why the wrap seems to have failed somewhat miserably. Some headbanger took a Classic set and decided to turn it into a concert tom set.

So, yes...it could be the condition of he outer ply of the shells (under the wrap) is bad...or it could be good. If bad, then rewrapping is your only option really. Although here again, I disagree with my forum mate. If you are gonna rewrap old Luddy 3-ply shells...for goodness sake, wrap 'em in something decent. Yes Sir A sparkle or a Ludwig-style white marine or blue marine pearl or sumthin'.

Don't go economical/creative on the wraps for these shells. Those were good shells.

If the outer plys are in good shape once the wrap is removed, then a wood finish could be nice, if you know how to do a good wood finish. It is something of an art form...I have seen too many which were just sanded, stained, and poly'd. Horrible. You have to do it right to make it look decent.

Either way, quite honestly,.....it'd probably be a wash if you went to resell after renovating. No profit to be made, but likely no loss to take either.

If you want to make a profit, don't touch 'em and just auction 'em off separately. You should top $200 very easily......

If all your concerned about is how much money you can get out of these, you would probably get the most parting them out. Nice lugs go for around $5 ea, and the bass drum claws go for around $5 ea on ebay. Then you have the lug screws, hoops, spurs, floor tom legs, tom brackets, t handles, etc..... Every little part will sell on ebay or right here on the for sale section of this forum. The best I could count is 60 large classic lugs that could go as much as $300 right there. What sizes are these shells? Lots of people looking for floor toms and toms. You could make a 3 piece kit out of some using the best parts from all and sell off the rest
