Early 60's Ludwig Kit question? Last viewed: 35 minutes ago

Recently acquired a pre-serial kit that has me puzzled...

20x14 bass with disappearing cymbal rod, 4 disappearing legs, and 8 lugs. The lugs are bowtie, which throws me out of the idea that it was a "Hobby kit". It does have the 13" tom (pre serial also, so assuming they were purchased together), but with no bass clamp mount.

It came with a pioneer model snare in the same wrap, however the serial number dates it to 1964, as well as the club date 14x14 floor that must have been added in 1964.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Sounds like an early 60's club date set. I had an oyster blue set like that. 22'bass drum and 13' tom. The tom mounted on the bass drum using a clip mount and the bass drum had a dissappearing cymbal mount. What to the legs on the bass drum look like? Probobly fold out spurs but the mounts on the bass drum are screwed on on the sides and the legs feed throungh a mount that looks like a lip folded over. Does bass drum have unpainted interior? Sounds pretty cool.

WFLkurt,

Much appreciated input! I took a head off and investigated. There are 4 disappearing legs. Only have two of the legs though. The same leg mounts as the cymbal mount. You are correct in that the interior is not painted, like the reso-coat that is on the 13" tom. I thought that club-dates had 10 bowtie lugs on the bass? This being a 20", possibly made it different? Also, I noticed that the hoops are painted a dark navy blue, and not black as I originally thought. Sparkling Blue Pearl wrap by the way. Most of the paint has flaked off from the past as well as clamping a cowbell holder and the tom holder in place.

Possibly a few pics would help also.....will try to get some loaded.

20 inch bass drums typically have 8 (16) lugs.

22 inch bass drums typically have 10 (20) lugs.

Not too much more I can add to the already spot on comments.

Hoops sound correct. My guess (until pics are posted) is that someone relocated the disappearing spurs ... or wanted to do the Buddy Rich thing (maybe a bit early) and added a second pair. I've checked all my Ludwig cats from that time period and cannot find a bass that carried two pair of these.

I believe you are incorrect in saying someone added the extra set as you can see. They are not actually in line with each other.

Could have been added at the factory as a special order, or added later on, but added they were........

They look to be added in an effort to reverse the bass side. This is getting frustrating without good pics, though. How 'bout a shot of the bass on the outside so we can deduce the placement of the mount and it's juxtaposition to the player. Thanks.

Here is a few more pictures. I only have two legs, so I placed them in the same side to show the difference. I realized after doing this, that the beater side leg (the one on the right) is slightly positioned up from the one on the left. The other side is identical to this. It is my belief that this is so there is different angle's for the feet to touch, thus all 4 not on the same plane.....am I totally off base with this assumption?
