Early 60's Ludwig Kit question? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Have you removed the nuts and such to see if the holes are factory clean? It should be fairly apparent whether the holes are factory or not. Unless some Yoda Drum Dude did the work, there would be a roughness to the work. Post a pic of those ... please.

Those sure don't look like a factory placement to my eyes.

As I said at the start, I could be wrong ... but I'm not leaning that way, yet.

This has me scratching my head!

The first picture is the hole near the beater side....the second photo is the one that "should" be factory if any. If the first picture was modified after the factory, they did an excellent job!

The second photo is of the hole that is 2 1/2" from the batter (bass drum beater). Are the disappearing spurs located typically in this area, or are they positioned at the (face) head.

The photo's I took earlier of the two spurs on the bass...the second photo we are referring to is the hole on the right......not the left.

Sorry for the confusion.....

Here's another Dipterous plaything for your ointment ....

Ludwig didn't make a kit that utilized disappearing spurs until about 1964. Prior to that, they used the 1305's (twin-screw shell mount fold outs) and 1301's (Giant clip-on's). Man oh man ... tough one, this is.

I've had several basses with double disappearing spurs, & none of them were exactly in line. They don't have to be very far off to be noticeable when the legs are extended. Someone suggested that they were offset intentionally to reduce stresses on the shell but I kinda doubt that.

I like double spurs because I play lefty & can turn the bass around and still have spurs up front where they belong.

That blue sparkle set looks real nice. Like was said, the blue hoops were factory....marko

Appreciate all the feedback!

I am looking forward to bringing this kit back to life! Needing some parts to make her right, but I believe it is worth it!

My thought was that they were offset so they would "bite" better, that way you would have 4 separate points of contact.

Ludwig's quality control wasn't always the best. The badge on my '64 Super Classic bass drum is noticeably off-center. It also sports the above-mentioned disappearing spurs (only one set), contrary to all catalog pictures. Must have come through on a Friday!
