Where did it all start? Last viewed: 10 seconds ago

We all have a story. That instant where the vintage drum bug bit you right in the keester. Anyone care to share their story?

Here's mine - My first kit was an old Stewart in BDP (still have it). I found it at the curb in the neighbor's trash with some hardware and a pair of hats. I hauled it all in, cleaned off the grime and started playing it... hmmm... I liked drums. Fast forward about 14 years or so (which also included a period of absence from music). I decided to get back into drumming, so I bought a Ludwig Accent Elite kit and loved it! About a year later, I was away for work and stumbled upon an ad on the local CL for a 1970 Ludwig kit in bowling ball oyster blue and went to have a look because I had heard of that wrap, but never seen one in person (figuring it would just be for Sh**s and giggles). I knew almost nothing about vintage drums at the time besides the fact that they were old. I walked into the guy's place, laid eyes on the kit and BLAMMO! "Something bit me!" (Forrest Gump)

I still have the kit and I love it!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I've been teaching drumset for 49 yrs. and have been playing for 53 yrs...I always had 10 or so vintage/modern snare drums lying around that I used here and there but I never paid any attention the "vintage" aspect of them...fast forward to 1995...I had been reading about old drums and saw some ads re: vintage snare drums so I took a few up to Sam Adato's Drum Shop in SF and made a trade for a 1930s 7x14 (maybe 6.5x14) WMP WFL Swing Model, took it home and cleaned it up and the bug bit hard! That was my first official vintage snare drum deal...I still have the drum as it's pretty rare....to this day I still feel like I'm the honeymoon with this hobby and I'm having an absolute blast!

My story started in 1975 when i was 15 years old.I have always like the look of vintage drums. My first vintage drum was a vintage 1950's W.F.L. snare drum that my grandmother give to me when i was 9 years old in 1969.I don't have that snare anymore i traded it for a new 14x14 Maxwind floor tom to go with my set in 1972 or 73.Back to 1975 thats when the vintage bug got me i started to look for old drums. At that time i was buying every vintage drum or drum set i could fine. From pawnshops, junkshops, ete i stil have most of these drums still till today.Mikey

I've been drumming for 20 years now, and although i alway loved the music from the 60s and 70s i never thought about buying a kit from that era. About seven years ago i then got a 1966 ludwig supersensitive in amazing condition for basically free, and i fell in love with the sound, look and everything else. Of course i still have that drum, along with many other vintage ludwigs and a few sets.... An addiction very hard to control, not that i want to... :-)

For me, the vintage drum bug bit me only a couple of years ago.

I had just been laid off my good-paying manufacturing management job and just was basically looking for something to do to supplement a much smaller salary.

So, I dug out of storage a shoe-box sized box of (mostly) 70s Ludwig parts that always went with me in a fishing tackle box when I played out on the road in the mid-70s. The stuff sold like crazy, so I started looking around for more stuff to sell. Well, I didn't have trouble finding any, and it didn't take long for me to start repairing/refurbishing drums as well as just selling parts...

I've made what I consider to be 4 major finds/purchases since that time as well as several smaller purchases of drums, hardware, and percussion equipment. Enough inventory that I've very little room in my doulbe-car garage as well as a complete take-over of one of our upstairs bedrooms (kids are all gone now). I've posted in the gallery some of what I've worked on, all of which are long gone (sold).

And now, the understatement: I'm hooked. Yes, hook, line, and sinker (tackle-box pun intended). My biggest problem is I have so many repair/refurbish/restore projects to do that I readily admit at time I feel overwhelmed.

It never really bit. I got a new 64 Luddy red sparkle SuperClassic kit when I was quite young ... started playing when I was two in 64. Always had some older drums and some new drums hanging around. It wasn't until a few years ago when I gave up on the new drums sounds and stayed only with the older builds. I like the sounds of older drums. I guess like some of us, it's just always been there.

Hmmm... These are all very interesting tales of how the bug took it's bite. Some from necessity, some from inquisitiveness, some from vanity (vintage look or sound -vs- new)...

Then there is my reason:

These are the kits I learned on, gigged on or dreamed about as a young man.

Yep, you guessed it.

I, are vintage...
