What do I have and is it ok to play? Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Hello everyone, new member today. I have a vintage Ludwig kit and needed help verifying what I think I know. The serial numbers on the toms, bass and snare are all 1010XX. From what I could find this makes them 1964. Not sure of the name of the kit. I put new heads on the toms and snare and would like to start playing them. Is this a bad idea? Sorry the pictures are from my phone so they aren't the best. Also have some stage lights throwing off the fact that they are silver. Look forward to hearing from everyone that can help me figure out what I have. I also took a shot of one of the badges with the serial. Thanks ahead of time!

Just to add, the toms are 12", 16" and the bass is 20". Don't know if that helps to identify the model of the kit.

Very nice kit!! Play it and have fun!! I would personally never gig with it, unless it was a one-nighter, wouldn't think of leaving that without me very near it. And I would venture to say you're in the right ballpark with the year of manufacture.

Welcome Nice kit. You've come to the right place. These drums are well made and have lasted close to a half century so far, (like me) so I don't think that your playing them would hurt them at all, they were made to be played, and should sound great. If the floor tom were 14" it would qualify as a Downbeat kit, but otherwise, I'm curious myself as to what it would actually qualify as. I have one Downbeat, one Super Classic, and two kits that are 20", 13", and 16", and I'm not sure what you'd call those kits either. Keen to hear what others on forum have to say on that matter.

I say add a 14"x14" to the set-up! Kick-a$$ and take names later. Great kit and by all means, enjoy it!

That is a very nice kit. Sometimes pics can be decieving. Did you measure the toms from just inside the rim to the opposite side inside the rim? That mounted tom looks like a 13" to me. I think that is a complete set.

Also if I'm not seeing things you have your spurs in backwards. Swap sides with them. They go in from the opposite side of the mount you have them in.

Love the Jazz Festival snare. Wish I had one in Silver sparkle.

beautiful kit. i love it. most references do list that serial number range in 64. but ive been tracking and documenting them for years. those would normally be spring 65 drums and actually march 65 drums. didnt see any date stamps inside when changing heads? the could be faint,faded off or wiped clean if some one ever cleaned te interiors. its easy to do. some also didnt come with stamps.

your kit could have either red or white felt on the baseball bat mufflers on the toms. your kit could also be correct with chrome over brass or chrome over steel hoops or a mixture,one of ludwigs many transition periods.
