Here's a comparison with a vintage Ludwig, Slingerland and the new Legacy. Not a whole lot of difference between them.
True not a lot, but I did think the 73 Ludwigs were a bit more pleasing. Something about the attack, like it's still loud but "softer", in a good way...?

I didn't watch the video. But those might have been clear maple interior 3 plys. That sound you described is spot on for those type shells.

Exactly. I do think I can hear more sustain in the vintage Luddy's, especially in the 1st floor tom. Overall the sound on this kit seems a lot more "rich"
The Slingy rack tom sounded choked a bit, but certainly not bad.
Hell, I'd take any of those kits

To my ears the best balanced set are the Legacy's. I am very impressed by them.
The 13" and the 16" on the B/O kit sound rounder and warmer but don't have the bite of the legacy's. But that tone is nicer. The 18" sounds meh.
The Slingerlands whilst not a bad set, don't stack up to either of the above. I would take the new legacy's over the old Slingerlands any day. New wins there. WOW!
But I think I would take the B/O Luddies over the Legacy's. But only just.
There has been some changes in glue formulations. In days past, animal based glues were used. Today's new glue formulations are an improvement. Ask someone in the piano business about it, those guys know a lot about glue. There are a handful of custom drum makers who specialize in building ply drums with little to no glue. Less glue = better vibration of the shell.
I think the B/O badge Luddy's sounded the best in that comparison. Thanks for posting the video!
Oh...and I would never fork out the cash for a new kit when you can have a cooler and better-sounding/looking vintage kit for cheaper!

I've owned a lot of drums over the years, but I've never once paid for a brand new set. I did however buy a kit that was brand new in boxes, but I certainly didn't pay retail. I bought it in an alleyway at the back entrance of a music store from a guy who was sneaking them out. It was real hush hush. I paid him about about a grand which was less than a quarter of what they were selling for at the time. Played it for about a year and when I sold it on I got my cash back out of it... And then some.
